Immigration*1718 Pennsylvania, USA; In Chronicles of Penn 1688–1748: The account books of Penn's agents show that by September 6, 1719, James Galbreath "late of Ireland" is charged in 1720 for 100 acres out near the Susquehanna R. Per the Orbison Manuscript, James settled in Conestoga Township, Chester County (later Donegal Township in Lancaster County). The assessment list of Conestoga Township for 1721 shows an assessment against "James Kilbrah" with a valuation of £5 and a tax of 1s 3d.
Walter Gilbert states: "The reason for the immigration of the Galbraith family at that time can only be speculated upon, but from 1714 to 1719 there were severe droughts in Ireland with attendant loss of crops and livestock. Also, as the lookout on the original log cabin church attests, there was active hostility against Presbyterians."

Land1761 Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, USA; This was a tract of land originally owned by George Croghan but he lost the land when Richard Peters called in the mortgage. James then purchased the land from Peters. The property was on the banks of the Conodoguinet Creek and he subsequently bought an adjoining tract of land. When he died in 1786, the land was divided between his two youngest sons, John and Andrew. John received the house which currently (2001) belongs to the Keck family on Skyport Road near Carlisle. It was built about 1770 by James Galbraith, Jr. Andrew received the two houses and property at the corner of Skyport and Terrace, one being the log cabin that was originally built in about 1740 by George Croghan and is probably the oldest house still standing in Cumberland County. The other house was James Galbraith Jr.s' house which was built in 1761 or 1762 when he moved across the Susquehenna River and purchased the property. James' will directed that Andrew was to pay "my said wife Elisabeth the one third part of the produce and profits of the said tract of land yearly." Elisabeth continued to live on Andrew's property, either in the main house or perhaps the log house, until her death in 1799. Tax roles in the late 18th century show the house to be a one story house, so additions have obviously been added over the years.12,2
