| Article* | November 1987 | Sayre, Oklahoma, United States, Mrs. Franks, 99, and still at home By Virgie Vermillion of the Journal Staff Mrs. Flora Franks, who celebrated her 99th birthday on November 9, said she has had a good life thus far. Her late brother-in-law, Nathan Franks told her she would live to be 100, "so we'll see," she said. Mrs. Franks was born and reared in Izard County, Ark. She married W. B. Franks in 1907. "We were married in my home near Newburg, Ark.," she said. She added that it was a nice wedding, and everything buzzed with excitement. Lots of friends and family attended, and "Uncle T. S. Evans was the preacher who married us. He was a nice old man," she said. They moved to Wellington, Texas in 1912, then back to Ark., during World War 1 in 1918. They later returned to Texas where they lived on a farm near Shamrock. Mr. Franks was a bookkkeeper for the Coop Gin in Shamrock. They came to Sayre in 1959, where she has lived since that time. Mr. Franks died in April of 1965. She is very proud of her family. "We raised a lot of family," she said. We had eleven children, and raised eight." She added that she had never been in a hospital until recently when she had eye surgery. She had cataracts removed twice, and also has had a cornea transplant. Her children are E. E. Franks, Truth or Consequences, N. M., Lloyd, Albuquerque; Harold, Houston; Jean Williams, Pasadena, Texas; Melba Miller of Nacogdoches, Texas; and Zela Balkcom, Sayre, whose twin died in infancy. One other son, Eulan Ray (Buddy) passed away two years ago. "When we were raisng them we didn't have all these nice things like washers and dryers," she said. "We rubbed clothes on the board, and heated irons on the stove. In those days, we ironed everything, too." She added that she finally got one of those steam irons, and a washing machine before her youngest daughter left home. When she was asked about diaper washing with all that family, she chucked and said "It sure would have been much easier with a washing machine. They don't wash them nowadays. They just throw them away." She hesitated a moment and added, "But I believe we were happier then. What we had was ours. But times change, and we have to change, too." During her childhood she attended a one room school that had a big wood stove. Her favorite teacher was "an old man who was 90 years old." He had gray hair, she said. She was raised on a farm. "We had a double fireplace that warmed two rooms. My daddy was a Methodist preacher, and my husband's daddy was a Methodist preacher. We were covered up with preachers, you might say." She has a woman who stays with her now, because her children insisted she not live alone. She does some of her light housework, and dresses herself, and "gets around the house pretty good." Mrs. Franks loves going to church, and is a member of the Assembly of God Church in Sayre. She doesn't have any secrets about living along time. "Just hard work and God's blessings--just try to live for the Lord," she said. |
