Marriage*circa 1776North Carolina, United States; The date or name of wife of John's first marriage is not known. It is possible that his wife died in childbirth with son, Joshua, since John remarried shortly after Joshua's birth.
Military*1776From late in 1776, or early in 1777, John entered service as a volunteer and seved three tours of duty as a private. During the first tour he served four months in Captain James (?) Jones' Company in Colonel William Graham's North Carolina Regiment. During this time, he was stationed at McFaddin's Fort in Rutherford County for the purpose of ranging the country and "thereby to defend the defenseless citizens from the attacks of the Tories and Indians". From some time in 1780, about two months before the battle of King's Mountain, he volunteered for a second tour and served ten months in Captain Tutt's company in Colonel Leroy Hammond's South Carolina Regiment. He was employed as a ranger in North and South Carolina and was taken prisoner by Ferguson's Army but made his escape when the latter was defeated at King's Mountain and soon rejoined Captain Tutt's Company and Colonel Hammond's Regiment. A few days after his return home, he re enlisted in this same company for an additional three years but was relaeased from service after only four months following Captain Cornwallis' surrender.
The total amount of time verified for pension purposes was 18 months.
