During this time, he was stationed at McFaddin's Fort in Rutherford County for the purpose of ranging the country and "thereby to defend the defenseless citizens from the attacks of the Tories and Indians". From some time in 1780, about two months before the battle of King's Mountain, he volunteered for a second tour and served ten months in Captain Tutt's company in Colonel Leroy Hammond's South Carolina Regiment. He was employed as a ranger in North and South Carolina and was taken prisoner by Ferguson's Army but made his escape when the latter was defeated at King's Mountain and soon rejoined Captain Tutt's Company and Colonel Hammond's Regiment.
