| Military* | 15 December 1862 | Alabama, United States, James grew up in northwest Alabama. Marion County is located in the hill country of Alabama. There were few plantations in the county and accordingly few slaves. Slavery was not an issue here and the many small farmers had nothing to gain in a victory for slavery and many people in the area were against slavery. Like many young men from Marion County, he joined the Union Army of the United States. James Franks enlisted with Company A, First Alabama Regiment of the Alabama Cavalry Volunteers on December 15, 1862 at Glendale, Mississippi (near Corinth), along with his brothers, William, Peter and Jeremiah. He was mustered into service on December 31, 1862 at Corinth, Mississippi. He only served for two months before he died on February 2, 1863, in the army hospital at Corinth. |
