served in Moore's 10th Missouri Regiment, company F as a private. Both Lemuel and his brother, David were in this company. The 10th Infantry Regiment [also called 12th Regiment] was organized in November, 1862. Some of its members were raised in the counties of Chariton, Crawford, and Howard. The unit was assigned to A.E. Steen's, Parson's, and S. P. Burns' Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department, and saw action in Arkansas and Missouri. It lost 11 killed, 41 wounded, and 237 missing at Helena, and after the fight it mustered 236 men. The regiment sustained 34 casualties at Pleasant Hill and 10 at Jenkins' Ferry. During the spring of 1865 it disbanded. The field officers were Colonel W.M. Moore, Alexander C. Pickett, and A.E. Steen; Lieutenant Colonel Simon Harris; and Major Elijah Magoffin. Lemuel was captured by the Union army and interred in St. Louis (dates unknown).

The discrepancies are that in the age given for Lewis, one as 30 and one as 50. I believe the 50 to be correct. Both state that Lewis was born in North Carolina. One gives the female's name as Llysa and one as Disa - both age 60 and born in Ga. In the 1870 census, her name is given as Dicey, born in NC age 79. One gives a female, named Josie, aged 21, and one a male, named Joseph, aged 22. I believe that Joseph is correct as there is a J. C. Franks, male, age 40, living next to Lewis and Dicey. Both give a female named Matilda, age 22, however, one lists her surname as Cheeks and not Franks. The Beat 5 listing states: Lewis Franks SR, head of HH #59, age 50, farmer, real estate $250, born NC, cannot read or write, living with wife and two of his daughters. Living close by is son, Lewis, (assumed relationship) in the Beat 5 listing.
