There is a John Galbraith of Cumberland, documented in the Augusta court, VA records, who married a Barbara Brown and had daughters Nancy (Warren) and Jane (McClellan) born about 1780. A brother, William, provided a deposition in 1808 for this John, and mention is made of a brother James dying in Pequea, (south of Lancaster). This John had three sons, George, the oldest born in 1777. Additionally, Chester Co., Archives house a 1769 petition from one John Galbreath who is languishing in the Chester Goal as a result of a suit by George Brown and other disgruntled creditors including a William Galbreath. | |

| Birth* | 7 May 1769 | York County, Pennsylvania, United States, Age at death 69. The Red Tower article claims he was born in PA. However, the 1880 census states that he was born in NC. Interestingly, a letter written in 1957 by John William Galbraith (great grandson of William G.) stated the following: "I will endeavor to give you what information I have gotten from an aunt (Emma Galbraith Hancker), now deceased. According to her, my great or great great grandparents, one from Scotland, the other from Ireland, one Galbraith, the other Galbreath, settled in Adams county, in the vicinity of Gettysburg. Annie E. Warner, for whom the Gettysburg Hospital was named, was a descendant. Evidently she was a figure of some note and should appear in the many historical ledgers which abound in the Gettysburg section. At this point I have to skip generations or so to my grandfather, Walter, who had a twin sister, Keziah. This is all I know of this generation. The children of Walter are as follows: John M. (who owned a town property in New Grenada and died in the early 1930's). Grafton W., Emma, Mary and Robert E. (my father), all of whom are deceased. I am one of nine children born to Robert Elmer and Elizabeth A. (Stone) Galbraith, namely Mae B.,Viola J., Walter J., Edna P., John W., Elmer D., Mary E., Sarah E., and Olive. Of the above Mae , Viola, Mary and Olive are now deceased." Was he talking of this generation - since a Galbraith married another Galbreath - were one of their parents from Scotland and the other from Ireland? |
