Note* Larry Priest states, "All evidence indicates a continental background for the Gann's of Carolina and Tennessee, one both French and German, at times Swiss, and typical of Alsace-Loraine.
Upon arrival in America, one or more Gann went to the Upper Saucon Township settlement in Lehigh County, Tennessee. Whatever records of them were made, must have been put down in old-style German script and is beyond the understanding of most researchers. Furthermore, many papers are shut up in church archives.
Sparse items in Pennsylvania and northern Virginia indicate that one or more of the men must have moved south across the Potomac and into the Shenandoah Valley. They lived for a time near Winchester, Virginia and then drifted into southwest Virginia.
In the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, v35, pp188-194, 1911, "Records of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Congregation," Upper Saucon Township, Lehigh County, 1750-1764, we read:
7-21-1751, died Regina, wife of Johann Gann, aged 39, buried July 22
9-18-1751, married Johann Gann and Elizabeth Marsteller
11-12-1752, married Jacob Baum and Elizabeth Gann, widow.
We do not know whether Elizabeth, widow, was the same woman who had married John Gann, widower, the previous year. The name Elizabeth was most prevalent.
These statistics do show that at least one of the 1750 Gann immigrants was of middle age and accompanied to America by his wife."
