This was possibly the second marriage for Matthew since in her will Mary refers to a stepson, Alfred., Principal=Matthew II Marshall

Burin, Newfoundland, Canada, This is a transcription of Mary (Hanton) Marshall. She was the wife (probably 2nd) of Matthew II. Mr. Boyle who is mentioned was also the godfather to her daughter, Ellen in 1890. We believe that Alfred, the stepson, is a son from Matthew II's first marriage. The original will is in the Provincial Archives in St. John's. The watch and the ring that are left to Alfred are the same as those left to his father Matthew II by his father Matthew I. Following the line of succession we wonder if Alfred left them to his only son Richard James?

I, Mary Marshall of Burin being of sound mind do on this the 17th day of July 1907 make this my last will and testament. To my daughter, Ellen, I leave my house and all it contains, also the garden in front of the house. I leave to Alfred, my stepson, a silver watch and a gold ring formerly belonging to Matthew Marshall. To Ellen and Alfred I leave the following to be divided equally - namely my three stores - flakes, stable, shop and land at Riverdale.
Mr. Lawrence Boyle is to have the same use of the shop under the same terms as long as he wishes to keep possession of it.
I appoint Mr. Michael Mahoney, executor to this my last will and testament.

Burin, Newfoundland, Canada, This is thought to be his second marriage, since he was in his 50s when he got married. According to Matthew Marshall's letter (1981), Richard had 13 children by his first wife and 11 by his second wife. According to Madeline Sansoucy's letter (1981), he had 8 children by his 2nd wife. This seems to be supported by the 8 baptismal certifcates at St. Patrick's Church in Burin. However, Matthew's letter states that his father was the oldest and had to take care of the other 10 until they started moving around Canada.

Sponsors were Janet Barry and Alice Power. Priest was Father R. O'Donnell.

Frances Marshall said that it was always said that Richard's first family was adopted by Church of England adherents in the Burin area when his first wide died, and he had the temerity to marry a Catholic woman after that!, Principal=Richard George Marshall
