| Occupation | 1884 | London, Ontario, Canada, there was a listing in the city directory for "Mathew Minogue, Jr. living at 121 Quebec Street as a laborer for the Grand Trunk Railway". However, I believe this should have been Thomas' entry since Mathew, Jr. died as an infant. Thomas would have been 15 years old and working at the same place as his father. |

| Occupation | 1887 | London, Ontario, Canada, working as a tailor for R. Boyd and sons. He is listed as a tailor through 1891, however the place of occupation is not known. By 1892, his sister, Annie, is also working as a tailoress. |

| Name Change | circa 1894 | Thomas Henry Minogue, Family tradition says that he changed the last name from Minogue to Monogue because he didn't like people calling him "Mini". Must have been after 1894, since the Minogue spelling was listed at marriage. |

| Occupation* | In the cemetery record, Thomas is stated to have been a tailor and carpenter. | |
| Anecdote* | This information was gathered from Patrick Monogue, grandson of Thomas Henry Monogue. Thomas Henry was a conservative (in the political sense) ans was well-known by the people in government. Pat thinks that is how his father Thomas John got a job at the post office at the young age of 19. Thomas Henry was a tailor and he worked at a shop on James Street. Later, he owned a small tailor shop on Concession Street. This shop he later turned into "Tom Monogue's Ice Cream Parlour". Marlene Pryor has a picture of the sign for the shop. Although, Patrick does not remember his grandfather having an ice cream store, he does remember him bringing big tins of ice cream to the picnics they would have at Concession Park. Agnes, Thomas's daughter was also a seamstress but she worked for a big tailor outfit on King Street. When Thomas Henry got older he sold the shop and went to work for the Liquor Control Board store at Barton and Ottawa. His health deteriorated and he became confused probably from atherosclerosis and he came to live with Pat's family on Huron Street for a while because grandma couldn't take care of him by herself. He eventually went back to live with grandma and his daughters on Kensington Street. He stayed in the upstairs bedroom and he used to say he heard a baby crying (which would have been Marlene, Dorothy's daughter) but they just told him he was imagining things because they didn't want to explain that Dorothy had a baby. He died in the upstairs bedroom and on the same day "Aunt Lizzie" (Gibbons Armstrong) also died. So Grandma lost both her husband and sister on the same day., Principal=Mary Ann Gibbons | |

The articl stated: "After toting mail to Hamiltonians for 47 years, Thomas Monogue, of 775 Concession Street, walked out of the main post office this week carrying his lighttest load ever. But it was an important item - a scroll from Postmaster-general Ellen Fairclough. And it marked an end to Mr. Monogue's role as the city's senior letter carrier. This week he retired after walking more than 40,000 miles through Hamilton streets in those 47 years. At a special ceremony Postmaster A. B. Morris commende Mr. Monogue's cheerful disposition and devotion to duty over each one of those miles. Mr. Monogue delivered his first bag of mail in December, 1915. Since then he's had a route inseveral parts of the city. In the Kenilworth Avenue district, for instance, he delivered by horse and wagon over streets of cedar blocks. Once his horse almost collided with a train. In the Caroline and Hess Street North area, Mr. Monogue numbered among his customers, the notorious Rocco Perri, whose mysterious disappearance has never been solved. His next territory was the Mountain where for 11 years he daily walked 10 miles in an area bounded by Concession Stree, Fennel Avenue, Twenty-Third Street and Gage Avenue. Mr. Monogue reached the Mountain by taking the spur line on the incline. For eight months, however, he had to climb the steps twice a day when transportation was not available. For 19 years the old city hall and Market street were part of his route. He used to carry 1000 pieces of mail each day to city hall. More recently, he has delivered mail each day to stores and businesses in the heart of downtown Hamilton. ![]() |
