| Note* | From the book by Tom Stout (1921), Montana: Its Story and Biography, v.2, p.139. CHARLES E. O'NEILL. The law is known as a stern mistress, demanding of her devotees constant and unremitting attention and leading her followers through many mazes and intricacies before she grants them success at her hands. This incessant devotion frequently precludes the idea of the successful lawyer indulging in activities outside of the straight path of his profession, especially if his vocational duties are of large and important nature. Then again, some men have been led into the practice of the law through their connection with some other interests which necessitated a knowledge of the law along certain lines, and when this knowledge was gained, a desire was awakened to study still fur- ther and make the profession a life work. 'This latter was the case of Charles E. O'Neill, one of the successful attorneys of Butte, who became a lawyer through his initial studies with reference to banking law. Charles E. O'Neill was born at Marshall, Missouri, on February 22, 1889, a son of William P. O'Neill. The latter was born in Canada in 1860, and is now residing at Miles City, Montana. While still a child he was brought to Missouri by his parents, and there he was reared, educated and married, and became a farmer of Marshall, Missouri. In 1907 he came to Montana and has since been a resident of Miles City, having extensive farming interests in its vicinity. He is a republican in politics and a Roman Catholc in religious faith. William P. O'Neill married Julia Devaney, born in Missouri in 1865, a daughter of John Devaney, born in Ireland in 1814. His wife was also born in Ireland and they were married in Missouri, where both died, he in 1900 and she in 1901. They were farming people. The children born to William P. O'Neill and his wife were as follows: Stella, who married Dr. F P Mahon of St. Louis, Missouri, a dental surgeon- Charles E., who was second in order of birth; Ray Francis, who is a railroad employe of St. Louis Missouri; and Florence, who married George Ach- maker, formerly an importer of New York City but now a resident of St. Louis, Missouri. Charles E. O'Neill was reared at St. Louis and attended its schools, and in 1906 came to Miles City, Montana, and spent a year on a ranch in its vicinity. He then took a commercial course at the Butte Business College, specializing in stenography and bookkeeping, and in August, 1907, entered the Butte Commercial Bank, with which he learned the banking business, remaining with that concern until January 1, 1909, when he entered the First National Bank of Butte and continued with it until January 1, 1919, a period of ten years. During this time he became thoroughly posted with reference to banking of all kinds and banking law, and was admitted to the bar on June 11, 1919. He at once entered upon a general practice, and his offices are at Nos. 71-72 Owsley Building. Mr. O'Neill is independent m his political views. He belongs to the Roman Catholic Church. Fraternally he is connected with Butte Council No. 668, Knights of Columbus, in which he has been made a third degree knight, and the Knights and Ladies of Security. At one time he belonged to the Butte Country Club. In 1911, Mr. O'Neill was married at Butte to Miss Kathryn C. Sullivan, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs John J. Sullivan, both of whom are deceased, he having been a miner of Butte and a member of the police force, and came to the city during its pioneer epoch. Mr. and Mrs. O'Neill have three children, namely : Edalene Frances, who was born on Novem- ber 6, 1913 ; Helen, who was born January 22, 1915 and Jack Charles, who was born on November 8, 1916. Although one of the recent additions to his profession, Mr. O'Neill has already proved his abil- ity and is looked upon as one who will rise high in it, for he possesses the characteristics necessary for such advancement, being bold, independent and fearless, scorning petty tricks, fighting in the open for what he believes to be right. A man of sound judgment who weighs carefully both sides, he is certain of rendering impartial justice. | |

| Birth* | between 1814 and 1816 | Ireland, Research on birthdate: Burial record states she died in Hull 29 Oct. 1892 at age of 83. This would put birthdate at 1809. I believe this age at death is probably incorrect. As you said in your email, this would make John O’Neill quite young when she was born. Also, it would make her 51 when she had her last child which is quite old. Do you have a picture of her gravestone in Hull – that might tell us something. Census records indicate a later birthdate. January 1852 she is 37 which would be 1814. April 1861 she is 44 which would be 1816-17. April 1871 she is 58 which would be 1813-14. The 1881 census is unreadable for age and I can’t find her in any 1891 census (looked through all of Hull, etc.). My best guess is that she was born between 1814 and 1816 in Ireland. |

| Note* | From the book by Tom Stout (1921), Montana: Its Story and Biography, Vol.3, p. 1263 : Francis Daniel O'Neill was a prominent and well known ranchman of Powder River, Montana, with headquarters on the trail creek and since becoming a resident of Montana in 1885 he has also conspicuously identified with the political life of the commonwealth. Mr. O'Neill was born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, December 1864 but was reared near Lawerence, Kansas, where his father, James O'Neill owned a large Galloway Stock Farm. The senior O'Neill was born in Valcartier, Province of Quebec. He married in early life to Margaret Ryan, who was born in Tipperary, Ireland. From Kansas, James and Margaret O'Neill went to Saline County, Missouri, where Mr. James O'Neill spent the rest of his life there and his widow, subsequently passed away in Custer County, Miles City, Montana. Their children: John, who died without issue, James E., a wholesales merchant at Butte, MT. , Thomas died before marriage, William married Julia Devaney of Saline County, MO., Mary E. a resident of Butte, MT. a suffrage leader of the state. Frank Daniel: remained at the parental home until about 1882 or 1883 at the age of 18 or 19, when he made his way to Nebraska, then on to Oregon and Washington to California and finally to Montana. He had spent about one year as a laborer on ranches in the vicinity of Stockton, California. It was in April 1885, at 21, that he came into the territory of Montana from California, traveling over the Northern Pacific Railroad. He had little knowledge of the country he was entering and was seeking work. He first worked as a sheep herder for Oscar Gruell., whose ranch was located on the "Froze-to-Death Creek", north of Yellowstone. During a period of three years he worked at herding and shearing sheep and then entered the sheep business for himself, starting the industry as a half owner with Aron Laney in 1,000 head near the mouth of the Mizpah on the Powder River and he remained identified with the range of that region until he established his headquarters on Trail Creek in 1888. He continued associated with Mr. Laney for two years, then entering the business alone. In 1913 he gave up the sheep business and instead raised Herfords under the "ON" and 3 bar gate" brand. Frank entered his homestead at the mouth of Trail Creek also an additional homestead, containing 1000 acres along Powder River. Frank, Charles and his sister were in wholesale and livestock business together. In Custer County, Montana, 10/21/1901 Frank married Miss Margaret C. McKenzie. Her father, John G. McKenzie brought his family from, Stillwater, Minnesota to Montana in 1892, locating at Miles City, Montana. He was in the hotel business there, his death occurred; however on the O'Neill ranch when he reached the age of 80 yrs. and his widow passed away there a few years later. They were the parents of three sons and three daughters: Mrs. Kenneth McLean of Miles, City, Alexander G. whose home is in Salt Lake, Mrs W.T. Perman, of Glendive, MT, Margaret McKenzie was born in Stillwater, Minnesota, Fay W. and Royal McKenzie, the youngest two live at Powder River. Frank and Margaret had six children, Aileen, Thomas, Robert, Margaret, Emmett and Roma. Frank was elected to the 13 Montana Legislature where he served under Speaker McDonald. The about | |
| Note* | From the book, "Progressive Men of Montana": In the picturesque little hill city of Guelph, county of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, Frank D. O'Neill was born December 18, 1864. His father, James O'Neill, was likewise born in Canada, whither his father emigrated from Ireland about the year 1820. James O'Neill engaged in agricultural pursiuits in the province of Ontario and was also proprietor of a hotel in Guelph for a number of years. In 1867 he removed to Jefferson, Kansas and here raised Durham cattle and Cotswold sheep as his specialy, and later located in Saline County, Missouri where he gave his attentin to agriculture. His wife, whose maiden name was Margaret Ry an, was born in Ireland, whence she accompanied her parents on their removal to Canada when a mere child. James O'Neill died in Missouri in 1890 and his widow now resides in Miles City. They became parents of six children, of whom the subject of this review was the youngest, and one of the four yet living. Frank D. O'Neill received his early education in the public schools of Kansas, to which state his parents had removed when he was but three years of age, and thereafter he remained at the parental home until nineteen years of age. In 1884 he went to California, where he remained one year, at the expiration of which time he came to Montana, locating in Custer county, where he took up a shepherd's staff and sheep shears, and later a tract of land on Powder River, now having a well improved ranch of 5,000 acres, and also having access to an almost unlimited open range. Here he has been extensively engaged in the sheep business, running at the present time about 10,000 head. His ranch is located forty-five miles southeast of Miles City, whre he maintains his residence during the greater portion of the year, having an attractive home of modern design and conveniences. In his political allegiance Mr. O'Neill has ever been stanchly arrayed in support of the Democratic central committe of Custer county for the past ten years, while for two terms he held membership in the state central committee, having been identified with the same in 1900, when a dissaffected element in the rans of the organization attempted to disrupt the party in Montana at the state convention, held in the city of Butte. Mr. O'Neill was the Democratic candidate for representative of his county in the lower house of the state legislature, at the election of November 1900, but was defeated by a small majority. He has been a member of the state board of sheep commisssioners since 1898. In his fraternal relations our subject is a popular member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Independent Order of Odd Fellow, the Ancient Order of the United Workmen and also the Knights of the Maccabees. On the 21st of October, 1901, Mr. O'Neill ws united in marriage to Miss Ina McKenzie, who was born in Minnesota and reared in Montana, having been a successful and popular teacher in the public schools of Miles City prior to marriage. She is the daughter of John G. and Margaret McKenzie, natives respectively of Scotland and New Brunswick, and now residents of Miles City. | |

| Note* | 17 September 1870 | Sarcoxie, Kansas, United States, The Kansas State Historical Society's "City Notes": SHEEP: Mr. James O'Neill residing seven miles west of Johnson County, Tonganoxie, brought a flock of twenty-five head, several which he has already sold. Mr. O'Neill moved to this state, from Canada, a few years ago, (before 1870, for the purpose of engaging in the importation and raising of fine stock. He has lately brought on a car load of fine Leicester and Costwold sheep, besides a car of fine cattle and several head of Berkshire pigs. Mr. O'Neill is the kind of man we like to see come to Kansas, for there are the men upon whom we must rely for the full development of our great resources as an agricultural and stock growing state. A visit to the sheep he has now on exhibition, would more than repay the admission fee to the Fair-Ground. Those wishing to provide themselves with his flock will find him ready to dispose of them. James received an award for his sheep, 9/17/1870: James O'Neil for Long wool Ram/Lamb AWARDED By the Kansas Agricultural & Mechanical Association of Leavenworth, Kansas. |
