Note: This translation is from Bernie Monaghan who states the wife's name is Brennan (parents Thomas Brennan and Elizabeth Boyd). However, the church records state that her name is Lynch (parents Edward James Lynch and Johanna Boyd). The entry in the church records is placed at the end of 1888 and not in the October order. Later burial records and tombstone engraving indicate that her name was Mary Jane Brennan. Cashier at the Dominion customs office for many years and one of the founders and leading members of the Thistle Curling club, Francis Dennis Cassin died Sunday night at the General Hospital. Born in St. Boniface, Mr. Cassin was 53 years of age. For 22 years he was on the staff of the Dominion customs office. A keen curler, he was active in the formation of the Thistle Curling club, and was one of its most energetic members. In recognition of his services he was honored with the presidency of the club five years ago. He played third rock for the noted skip, the late William Ellerby ("William E.") when it won trophies at the Winnipeg bonspiel. Following Mr. Ellerby's death, Mr. Cassin became a skip himself, and as such enhanced his reputation on the ice. He was an executve member of the Manitoba Curling association, and a member of the Native Sons of Canada association. Mr. Cassin is survived by his wife, formerly Katherine Skelly, residing at 488 Basswood Place; one daughter, Lorraine Katherine, his mother, Mrs. William Whitby, Seattle, Washington; two sisters, Mrs. E. M. O'Donnell, Toronto, and Mrs. A. Fraser, Winnipeg; and two brothers, Charles of Seattle and Thomas of Manitou, Manitoba." |
