He was living with his father, Patrick Cassin, next of kin at 370 Wentworth Street South in Hamilton, Ontario. He was born in Quebec on the 17 June 1898 (baptismal records state 1899) and was currently a student and single. He agreed to be vaccinated and had never been in the armed forces before and agreed to serve in the C.E.F. He signed his name William James Cassin.
The 173rd Battalion sailed to England in November, 1916 where on January 4, 1917 it was absorbed into the 2nd Reserve Battalion. The 173rd Battalion had one Officer Commanding: Lieut-Col. W. H. Bruce.
