| (Witness) Death | 28 August 1889 | Valcartier, Quebec, Canada, Principal=Elizabeth Loughren |
| Occupation* | John was a skilled carpenter. | |
| Marriage* | 11 October 1892 | St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada, John lost his first wife, Elizabeth, in 1889. At this time, they had 4 children under the age of seven. As John lived on the old farm, and was quite a skilled carpenter, he was in demand to build barns and houses and at times he would be absent from home the greater part of the week, and he sould have someone to take care of the children in his absence. Whatever the arrangement was, it did not suit Father McGratty who was parish priest at time. So Father McGratty hitched his horse to the buggy and drove down to John Holton's to see if he couldn't do a little matchmaking. On his arrival there, he addressed himself to Catherine, the oldest daughter, still unmarried, about becoming the wife of John Corrigan, and to be a good mother to his children. She agreed to this arrangement as Father McGratty insisted it appeared to be the will of God in her regard. On the following weekend, so the story goes, Father McGratty drove up to see John Corrigan and suggested he remarry. Mr. Corrigan thought it was a good idea but added that he didn't think he could find a suitable wife at his advancing age who was willing to care for his family. The good priest explained the steps he had taken and the marriage took place on the 11th of October, 1892. "On the 11th day of October 1892, whereas the publication of three banns of marriage having been made at the prone of the parochial mass of St. Gabriel de Valcartier, between John Corrigan, widower of the late Elizabeth Loughran of this parish, on the one part; and Catherine Holton, daughter of age of John Holton, farmer of this parish and Catherine Sweeney, also of this parish on the other part. Having discovered no other impediment to this marriage, we the undersigned parish priest, have received their mutual consent to marriage and have given them the nuptial benediction in the presence of Patrick Cassin, the groom's friend and Michael Holton the bride's brother, who with friends and the bride have signed. The groom declared he could not sign. This act was duly read. Catherine Holton Patrick Cassin Margaret Ann Culleton Michael Holton H. McGratty, priest.", Principal=Catherine Holton |
| Note* | A story is told that in the late 1800's, John Corrigan received a visit from one of the Benalli family who wished to settle the Benalli estate, but John reckoning that he was offering too small a portion of the estate would not sign any of the domcuments he had with him. On his departure the Benalli gentleman said: "I'll leave a mark to prove I was here." So he scored one of the panes of glass in the kitchen window. This mark remained there until the house was destroyed by fire in the 1960's. This mark was made from a diamond ring which he wore on his finger. | |
| (Witness) Baptism | 19 June 1899 | Valcartier, Quebec, Canada, The baptismal extract states: On the nineteenth day of June one Thousand eight hundred and ninety nine, we the undersigned parish priest, have baptised William John, born on the seventeenth instant. | Migration* | between 1853 and 1854 | Wisconsin, United States, It appears that John and his wife, Ellen Mooney came to Wisconsin about 1854. Although the 1900 census for his son, William states that they came in 1852, it does not appear that this is correct based on the birthdates and places of his children. Also, I believe that he came with his brother, Michael and it is stated in the same 1900 census that he came in 1854. I also believe that Ellen's parents and siblings came at the same time as they are listed in the 1860 census. There is a listing in the "Old Settlers Club of Ozaukee County" that lists John C. Corrigan, born 1823 as having settled in 1853. |

| Event-Misc | 15 October 1884 | Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States, Newspaper item: "Our old neighbor John C. CORRIGAN Esq. paid our village a visit last Sunday. Mr. C. is now a citizen of Milwaukee engaged in the coal and wood trade. The Republicans have nominated him for County Treasurer of Milwaukee County and as far as hard work for the ticket is concerned, no better or more active man could have been selected. He will help the ticket more than any other man on it, if work can do it by a man who knows all the ropes to be pulled. The opposing candidate on the Democratic ticket is Mr. E. CARY of the 3d ward, who will be elected with the others on it by from three to five thousand majority. We are sorry for Mr. CORRIGAN, but then it cannot be helped; his friends put him up at the wrong time." |
| Event-Misc* | 10 December 1884 | Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States, "The Port Washington Advertiser has this to say of one of our former citizens and neighbors: "Mr. John C. CORRIGAN, recently of the town of Mequon in this county, is one of the most fortunate politicians we know of. Only about two years ago he moved to Milwaukee and went into the coal and wood business in that city, and at the late election he was elected county treasurer of Milwaukee county, by about 1,000 majority, an office which brings $4,500 per year. He was nominated and elected by the republicans and has for his bondsmen such men as ex-governor LUDINGTON, Ed. SANDERSON, and other wealthy men of that city. Personally we are on the best of terms with Mr. CORRIGAN and as it becomes inevitable that a republican was to enjoy the emoluments of the office we know of no man more deserving of it than he is. He is an indefatigable worker in anything he undertakes, whether in business or politics and true to his friends in every particular. The republicans showed their wisdom in nominating him, and if they had shown the same prudence in selecting their nominee for president matters might have turned out different with them. Although we differ in politics we don't blame him to feel proud of his endorsement." As we predicted at the time of his nomination, he proved to be the most indefatigable worker on the whole republican county ticket." |
