Journal*Christopher S. Baldwin; Christopher Baldwin (1807-1850) and wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) of Stewart County, Georgia, are the earliest known Baldwin ancestors of the southwest Oklahoma Balkcoms and Baldwins. Christopher and his brothers and sister were by one account orphaned at an early age and came to Georgia from Tennessee. First official records found to date show Christopher and his brothers Augustus and William as young heads of household in Randolph County, Georgia in 1830. Christopher and Elizabeth had married in around 1828. Later in Stewart County Christopher was well known and was Justice of the Peace for a time. He died at the age of 43, and within a couple of years of his death Elizabeth and many of their children moved to Dale County Alabama. Bryant F. Baldwin, one of their sons, married a neighbor girl Josephine Mathews. It was their daughter Ida Lucinda Baldwin who, with her husband John Ira Balkcom, were the first Balkcoms in Oklahoma, moving there in the early 1900s.

[Bryant F. Baldwin #40, age 5 at the time of this census, does not appear with the family. Sarah Baldwin #59, age 15, appears with a nearby family, Ira Hobbs age 50 of North Carolina, and Catharine Hobbs age 50 of Georgia. I have Sarah as a daughter of Elizabeth. Harrison Baldwin age 10 appears in the household of George Osbon (age 80) and Martha Osbon (age 52) and other Osbons ages 24-14. Is it possible that some of Elizabeth's children were placed with relatives or friends after Christopher's death in early 1950? ]5
