Journal* | Elizabeth (?); Christopher Baldwin (1807-1850) and wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) of Stewart County, Georgia, are the earliest known Baldwin ancestors of the southwest Oklahoma Balkcoms and Baldwins. Christopher and his brothers and sister were by one account orphaned at an early age and came to Georgia from Tennessee. First official records found to date show Christopher and his brothers Augustus and William as young heads of household in Randolph County, Georgia in 1830. Christopher and Elizabeth had married in around 1828. Later in Stewart County Christopher was well known and was Justice of the Peace for a time. He died at the age of 43, and within a couple of years of his death Elizabeth and many of their children moved to Dale County Alabama. Bryant F. Baldwin, one of their sons, married a neighbor girl Josephine Mathews. It was their daughter Ida Lucinda Baldwin who, with her husband John Ira Balkcom, were the first Balkcoms in Oklahoma, moving there in the early 1900s. | |
Birth* | circa 1807 | Georgia, USA; Mortality schedule and census of 1900 (for Christopher Baldwin's son William J. Baldwin) show Georgia as birthplace5,2,6 |

Event | 1836 | Stewart County, Georgia, USA; "Christopher S. Baldwin" filed suit to be paid damages of $605 for Creek Indian raids, under what is known as "Georgia Indians Depradations Claims". According to the reference the funds to pay these claims came from treaty monies owed to the Creeks from land sessions in the United States. His claim was denied.12 |

Birth* | circa 1840 | Georgia, USA1 |
(Witness) Comment | 1850 | Sarah Baldwin; Mockinson Gap District, Stewart County, Georgia, USA; Suspect a relationship between Sarah Baldwin b1835, John Baldwin b1839, and Harrison Baldwin b1840 in Georgia. In the 1850 Census they lived in separate households of other familes in the same district in Stewart County, and in the same district as Elizabeth Baldwin b1810 (ID#52) and family. It's possible that they are children of William D. Baldwin (ID#51) who died in 1842, or his brother Harrison Baldwin (ID#1167, not a lot known about him). Sarah Baldwin, age 15, lived with Ira Hobbs and family, John Baldwin, age 11, lived with Sanders Lott and family, and Harrison Baldwin, age 10, lived with George Osborn and family.2 |
Cen-Enum* | 1850 | GA Stewart Co Census 1850; Mockinson Gap District, Stewart County, Georgia, USA; as a ten year old child, living with George Osborn, age 80, born in Virginia, and Martha Osborn, age 52, born in Georgia. Possible maternal grandparents?3 |
(Resident) Census | 6 September 1850 | George Osborn, GA Stewart Co Census 1850; Mockinson Gap District, census pg 114, hh#263, Stewart County, Georgia, USA; "George Osborn", age 80, farmer, value of real estate >$1000 (100s digit illegible), born in Virginia; "Martha Osborn", age 52 born in Georgia; "Green Osborn", male age 26, born in Georgia; "Mary Osborn", age 24, born in Georgia; "Martha Osborn", age 22, born in Georgia; "John Osborn", age 20, student, born in Georgia; "Sophronia Osborn", age 18, born in Georgia; "Jane Osborn", age 16, born in Georgia; "Frances Osborn", female age 13, born in Georgia; "Harrison Baldwin", male age 10, born in Georgia.4 |
(Resident) Census | 19 July 1860 | (Head of Household) Elizabeth (?), AL Dale Co Census 1860; Newton Post Office, hh#411, Dale County, Georgia, USA; "Elizabeth Baldwin", head, age 45 (probably an error, more likely 55), a farmer, no listed real estate, $400 personal estate, born in Georgia. She may have been living on land of one of her sons W.J. Baldwin or John C. Baldwin who were listed on the census on either side of her and who both had land. Household: "Elizabeth Baldwin", head; "Harrison Baldwin", male age 20, farm laborer, born Georgia; "Bryant F. Baldwin", age 15, farm laborer, born Georgia; "Moses S. Baldwin", male age 11, born Georgia; "Sarah Baldwin", age 12, born Georgia.5 |
