Tax List1904John Ira Balkcom; Hatton, Van Zandt County, Texas, USA; "J. I. Balkcom" appeared on the tax list, on Survey No. "Hat", probably short for Hatton, a community south of Grand Saline. No real estate, 1 carriage/buggy listed at $40, miscellaneous property $5, 2 horses/mules at $75, 1 cow at $15, 1 hog at $10. J. W. Baldwin was also on this tax list, assessed for 1 carriage/buggy at $10, 2 horses/mules at $80, 2 cows at $20, 9 hogs at $18.

It is not a certainty that the J. W. Baldwin on Van Zandt County tax lists is this Jesse W. Baldwin but I think it is likely. Jesse is the brother of Ida (Baldwin) Balkcom who lived in Van Zandt County from 1902 to 1905 and of John Christopher Baldwin who lived there in 1903 according to tax lists. In addition, the obituary of Jesse Baldwin states that he attended Bible School in Dallas so he was in the region at some point.6

(Resident) Census22 June 1880Josephine L. (Missie) Mathews, AL Dale Co Census 1880; ED 64, Beat No. 9, Echo, Dale County, Alabama, USA; "Josephine Baldin", head, female age 31, keeping house, born in Georgia, father born in Georgia, mother in England;
"Laura Baldin", daughter age 13, in school, born Alabama;
"Elizabeth Baldin", daughter age 12, in school, born Alabama;
"Mary Baldin", daughter age 10, in school, born Alabama;
"John Baldin", son age 8, in school, born Alabama;
"Ider Baldin", daughter age 5, born Alabama;
"Jesse Baldin", son age 2, born Alabama.3
(Witness) Death18 June 1885Josephine L. (Missie) Mathews; Dale County, Alabama, USA; According to researcher Lola McTaggart, Laura Baldwin raised her younger sisters and brothers when their mother Josephine died. Their father Bryant had died 6 years earlier.1
(Witness) Tax List1904John Ira Balkcom, Ida Lucinda Baldwin; Hatton, Van Zandt County, Texas, USA; "J.

In addition, the obituary of Jesse Baldwin states that he attended Bible School in Dallas so he was in the region at some point.4
(Witness) Tax List1905John Ira Balkcom, Ida Lucinda Baldwin; Hatton, Van Zandt County, Texas, USA; "J. I. Balkcom" appeared on the tax list for Hatton community, also "J. W. Baldwin" in Grand Saline. J. I. assessed for 2 horses/mules at $100, 2 cows at $10, 6 hogs at $15. J. W. assessed for 2 horses/mules at $70, 1 cow at $10, 2 hogs at $5. No land. J. I. appeared on no more tax lists in Van Zandt County. J. W. Baldwin was on the 1906 list.4
Occupation*1910Arizona, USA; missionary to Navajo Indians in northern Arizona. He often had Indian visitors who would stay with him for a few days.5,2
Census*February 1920Navajo Indian Reservation, ED21, Coconino County, Arizona, USA; "Jessie Baldwin", head, single female age 40, born Alabama, parents born Alabama, renting, occupation missionary at Presly? Mission, income source listed as wages. Note: The spelling Jessie and sex female is a census taker error in transferring data from another page. He originally, and incorrectly, recorded the people on this census page (all non-Indian) as living in Navajo County. He later recognized the error, crossed them out on the Navajo County census, and transferred them to the Coconino County census (ED 21). In the transfer, he incorrectly spelled the first name as Jessie (originally Jesse) , and incorrectly listed the sex as female (originally male).

Of the dozen or so whites (non-Indians) listed in this district (Western Navajo Indian District) in Coconino County, 9 were on this census page. One, a 31 year old German immigrant, was listed as Indian Trader at a store, one, a 30 year old California native, native tongue Portugese, and with Portugese parents, was Agent/Telegrapher for the Santa Fe Railroad. The rest were associated with the Presly Mission - two missionaries, one teacher, one matron, and spouses. One of the missionaries was Jesse Baldwin, the other was a 62 year old male immigrant from England and his 86 year old mother.6

John Baldwin1

#521, b. circa 1839
Last Edited7 Oct 2009
Comment*It's possible that John is a son of William D. Baldwin (#51, d1842). A John Baldwin born 1839 appears in the 1850 household of Sanders Lott. Is there a Lott/Baldwin family link?
Birth*circa 18391
(Witness) Comment1850Sarah Baldwin; Mockinson Gap District, Stewart County, Georgia, USA; Suspect a relationship between Sarah Baldwin b1835, John Baldwin b1839, and Harrison Baldwin b1840 in Georgia. In the 1850 Census they lived in separate households of other familes in the same district in Stewart County, and in the same district as Elizabeth Baldwin b1810 (ID#52) and family. It's possible that they are children of William D. Baldwin (ID#51) who died in 1842, or his brother Harrison Baldwin (ID#1167, not a lot known about him).

Sarah Baldwin, age 15, lived with Ira Hobbs and family, John Baldwin, age 11, lived with Sanders Lott and family, and Harrison Baldwin, age 10, lived with George Osborn and family.2
