Comment | Nancy Balkcum; Nancy Balkcum and Mariah Balkcum were daughters of Hester Balkcum according to Hester's will. Their father(s) are unknown. They were not children of Hester's husband John Balkcom who Hester married in around 1799 and who died in 1803. Hester did give Nancy and Mariah the Balkcum surname. Nancy, who apparently never married, gave her children the Balkcum surname as well. At least two of Nancy's children, Eliza b1829 and Margaret were of mixed race based on identification as mulatto in the federal census. A photo of Eliza held by descendant Lisa Y. Henderson seems to confirm this. Nancy had in her household in 1840 a slave boy under 10 who was identified as "insane and idiot at public charge", possibly really her son?
Birth* | circa 1814 | Sampson County, North Carolina, USA; birth date estimated from later census records. Mariah was listed as age 36 in the 1850 census, (erroneous) age 35 in 1860, and age 54 in the 1870 census.3 |

Comment | Mariah Balkcum; Nancy Balkcum and Mariah Balkcum were daughters of Hester Balkcum according to Hester's will.
Birth* | say 1794 | North Carolina, USA; Records are inconsistent regarding Nancy Balkcum's birth date. Her son Harman's birthdate was possibly 1815 (per 1860 census), or 1822 (per Confederate army enlistment records). Her mother Hester was married to John Balkcom by at least the late 1790's, and until John's death in 1803. Nancy was not John's child per his estate records so she was born before Hester's marriage to John or after. The 1840 census lists Nancy's age as between 30 and 39, which would have her born between 1801 and 1810. Within those years she could not have been born before 1804 since her birth would have been after John Balkcom's death. If the 1840 census is correct, Nancy's birth would have been between 1804 and 1810. Hester in 1810 had no young girls in her household which would suggest that Nancy was born in 1810, after the 1810 census. However, that's too late given the birth her son Harman. I found the ages of several people in the 1840 census of Sampson County to be inconsistent with later censuses. I think the most likely explanation is that Nancy was Hester's child before her marriage to John Balkcom, possibly born as early as 1791. That could explain why there were no girls in Hester's household in the 1810 census since Nancy may have been out of the household and independent by then. This would make her born before 1798, and more likely before 1795 (otherwise she should have appeared in Hester's household in 1810). I am a dna match to some descendants of Hester and Nancy so their relationship would seem to be biological and not adoptive.3,4 |

Journal* | "James Balkcom" appeared in the 1850 census in the household of Lemuel and Jemima Balkcom as an 8 year old male. In 1860, in the same household, "James Balkcum" was listed as age 19, listed last after all other children rather than first as his age would suggest. Possibly James is a brother of Lemuel rather than a son. If a son, the age gap of three years between James and the next oldest is not typical of this family that had a child every year beginning in 1845. For this compilation I'm still calling James a son of Lemuel.
