Comment* | there is no known link between these Johnston County Brannons and Rosia, our ancestor, who lived in SC in 1808 with her children. However, the death date of this William Brannon is interesting with respect to Rosia appearing as head of household, and he needs to be looked at further.

John Bryan1
#2473, b. before 1785, d. say 1841
Last Edited | 18 Jun 2016 |
My ResearchNote* | John Bryan was appointed by the court as guardian of John Balkcom's surviving minor children. He may have been related to widow Hester Balkcom, possibly a brother, since it was not uncommon for a widow's brother to be appointed guardian of surviving minor children (see citation). John Bryan "my friend" was also named co-executor of the unprobated will of Nathaniel Merritt (1819) of Sampson Co. Witnesses were John Bryan, David Merritt, and Lewis Bowen. John Bryan also appeared as a witness to the will of Gabriel Merritt (will 1820).2,3
Birth* | before 1785 | date estimated from his appointment as guardian of John Balkcom's children in 1806, when he would have to have been age 21 or over. |
(Witness) Estate | 21 January 1806 | John Balkcom; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA; The court appointed John Bryan Guardian to Willie Balcom & Tomzin Balcom, Minor Orphans of John Balcom, dec'd, he gave Bond of 1000 pounds; Ordered he take their Estate into Possession. The court appointed Aaron Williams, William Stoakes & John Stallings a Committee to settle the accounts of Estate of John Balcom. It further ordered John Bryan, Guardian to Orphans of John Balcom, dec'd, pay Hester Balcom $30 out of Interest of said Orphans money in his hands for each year she has maintained said two Orphan Children.4 |
(Executor) Will | 18 August 1819 | Nathial Merritt; Sampson County, North Carolina, USA; see attached copy. Nathial Merritt's will names sons Gabriel and Patrick, and daughters Treecy Merritt, Unity Merritt, and Ann Merritt. Son Patrick and friend John Bryan were named executors. Witnessed by John Bryan, David S. Merritt, and Lewis Bowen.5 ![]() ![]() |
(Witness) Will | 3 June 1820 | (Testator) Gabriel Merritt; Sampson County, North Carolina, USA; Gabriel Merritt's will names his wife Sally, son Wright, daughter Tempy Jane. Brother Patrick is named executor. Witnessed by John Bryan and David Merritt. In a petition to the court in February 1821, after Gabriel's death, wife Sally declared that the amount provided her (165 acres, goods, and a slave) was insufficient and that she was entitled to dower, identifying specific land.6 |
(Witness) Land | 13 April 1839 | John Balkcum; Sampson County, North Carolina, USA; (see attached deed) John Balkcum [grandson of Hester Balkcum] sold land to Hester Balkcum for $1070. Hester within two years gave this land to her daughter Nancy Balkcum and grandson James Lucien Balkcum, a toddler, who was son of William L Robinson and Hester's daughter Mariah. It's not clear if this is the land Hester originally received on the death of her husband John Balkcom in 1803, and if so how grandson John Balkcum came into possession. "... land lying near the waters of the Beaverdam Creek adjoining the land of Nathan Johnson's and Samuel? Johnson Jr ... tract ... beginning at ?? Rogers' old corner ... Scot's Branch ... along Rogers' old line to the Beaverdam Swamp thence up said swamp to the Horse Branch then up along a marked line to a little branch then across said branch to Matthew Pridgeon's line thence said line to the beginning containing 130 acres ..." Witnesses Wm L. Robinson and John Bryan.7 |
Will* | 1840 | Sampson County, North Carolina, USA; The will identifies wife Eleanor Bryan and names children, appoints "my dear friend and neighbor David Murphy" executor, and is witnessed by R. Parish, Patrick Murphy, and B. Stith. It identifies land and refers to a large family bible and religious books including a book of sermons.8 |
