Education*1850Mt. Carmel Academy, Crawford County, Georgia, USA; Estate papers of James Mathews include debts to Thos. E. Smith for 40 weeks tuition and books for Mathews children Josephine, Jefferson E., Lydia Ann S., and Paul. A book charge for Josephine and Paul was simply called Worcester's History. This may have been "Elements of History, Ancient and Modern", By Joseph Emerson Worcester, published 1845.
This Mt. Carmel Academy was likely associated with the Mount Carmel Primitive Baptist Church Crawford Co. A James Mathews was identified as an elder of this church.2,3

Will*Inferior Court, Crawford County, Georgia, USA; In a filing by two complainants to the Inferior Court (the surviving original paper in the James Mathews Estate folder is undated, estimated 1850), reference is made to James Mathews' will having previously been set aside by the court.2
Death*1850Crawford County, Georgia, USA; The death date is uncertain but was apparently after Nov 5, 1850. A bill found in James' estate papers originally had that date, and referred to debt owed by the estate. The Nov 5 was marked out, and other changes were marked to refer to the debt as owed by James Mathews and not by the estate.
Also in estate papers was a bill to the estate for tuition for James' children, dated 1850.2

My father, Jas. M. Mathews had an Uncle Red Jas Mathews who lived one and a half miles west of Knoxville, Ga. Whose mind was gone in the Spring of 1865 as I came home from the Army, and never became permanently sound afterward, Sons dead, Negros freed.
This writing in around 1900 raises questions about whether I have properly identified this James Mathews who is no doubt James M. Mathews, with the family as described below.3

(Deceased) Executor(Administrator) James N. Mathews; Superior Court, Crawford County, Georgia, USA; The court ruled (undated original paper in the James M. Mathews folder) in a matter of James N. Mathews vs. David M. Mathews and other Caveators. David and the others (his siblings?) appealed an appointment by the Court of the Ordinary of James N. Mathews as Adminiistrator of the estate of James M. Mathews. James M. Mathews had been guardian of James M. Mathews who was identified as "an imbecile and insane person". The Superior Court denied the appeal, leaving James N. Mathews as administrator.2
Witness: David M. Mathews
(Deceased) Executor*4 October 1875(Administrator) James N. Mathews; Court of Ordinary, Crawford County, Georgia, USA; James N. Mathews, administrator of the estate of James Mathews, deceased, and former guardian petitioned the court to appraise the estate of James Mathews. An earlier petition on 6 February, 1871, identified James Mathews as imbecile [still living] with James N. Mathews appointed guardian. A similar court paper indicates James is still living on July 2, 1873. [I haven't determined which James Mathews this is but it's possibly #360 born 1795, the James who married Martha. The long responsibility of guardianship and then estate administration suggests that James N. Mathews and James Mathews (ward) were related. A lawsuit in Superior Court by David M. Mathews against James N. Mathews, challenging appointment of James N. Mathews as administrator, suggests strongly that James Mathews b. 1795 is the correct James. David M. Mathews was son of James b. 1795].2

(Administrator) Executor(Deceased) James M. Mathews as administrator.9
Witness: David M. Mathews
(Administrator) Executor*4 October 1875(Deceased) James M. 1795].9
