Marriage*October 1835James E. Balkcom; Georgia, USA; marriage license for "James Becham and Mary Murphy" dated 13 October, 1835. It's likely that this Becham is James Balkcom but this is unconfirmed. This is about the time that James Balkcom came to Lowndes County, settling not far from the Thomas County line. It's also about the time he and Mary married, based on children's ages. No Bechams are listed in Lowndes or Thomas in the census and none in Lowndes tax lists through 1844. However, a Hiram Becham is listed in an 1866 Thomas County marriage record, and census records show a number of Becham families in Georgia's Crawford and Stewart Counties.

Journal*James E. Balkcom; James E. Balkcom and Mary (Polly) (maiden name probably Murphy) of Duplin County, North Carolina are the earliest known Balkcom ancestors of the Oklahoma Balkcom family. James' parents have been impossible to prove through standard research but DNA testing shows that Hester Balkcum, widow of John Balkcom of Duplin County, is James' mother. John Balkcom, and other Balkcoms of North Carolina before 1800, were descendants of Alexander Balkcom of Providence, Rhode Island in the 1600s. It has been thought that James was a descendant also of this family, but it appears that James' father was not a Balkcom although that is not proven.

Indications are that his wife Mary is a Murphy from the Duplin County area of NC but proof has not been found.

Some time before 1838, when James was around age 30, he moved from North Carolina to Lowndes County, Georgia, and it was likely there that he married Mary Murphy who had apparently also come down from North Carolina to Georgia and was a neighbor. They started what was to become a large family in Georgia and in a few years they moved to Dale County, Alabama where he bought considerable land and they lived out their lives. James was by occupation a farmer and a hatter. One son, Brantley, at age 18 married a neighbor girl, Roseann Brannon. It was their son, John Ira Balkcom, who shortly after his own marriage moved his family west to Oklahoma. John Ira Balkcom and Ida Baldwin were the progenitors of the Balkcom family of western Oklahoma and there are many descendants of John Ira and Ida living now in Oklahoma as well as all over the U.S.
Birth*1814North Carolina, USA; date is from her tombstone, and her birthplace is confirmed to be North Carolina based on the U.S. Census of 1900 listing parents of son Brantley.4,5
Birth-Alt.1816North Carolina, USA; Alternate birthdate is based on census 1880, 1870 and 1860.6,7,8

Census1840James E. Balkcom; Lowndes County, Georgia, USA; "James Balkum". The household included 2 males under 5 (likely sons John W. and James A.), 1 male 30-39 (James); 3 females under 5 (daughter Colista, and two unknown), 1 female 20-29 (Mary Polly). The households of Wiley Balkcom and Daniel Murphy are nearby.11
Migration*Dale County, Alabama, USA; Date estimated based on children births.
Census23 July 1860James E. Balkcom; Newton Post Office, Dale County, Alabama, USA; "James Balkcom", head, age 53, farming, born in NC, real estate value $1500, personal estate $700.

The households of John W. Balkcom (son of James and Mary) and wife Nancy age 19 (newly married) and Daniel Murphy (with wife Elizabeth and a 12 year old male Milton Murphy) were adjacent. Neither of the other families showed land holdings so it's likely that they had houses on the land of James Balkcom.

Also listed on the same census page were Lewis Deal and wife Nancy J. Brannon Deal, with family. Nancy J. Brannon (person ID#1314) was the oldest daughter of Rosier Brannon and Anzilla Galloway, and sister to Rose Ann Brannon who was daughter-in-law to James and Mary Balkcom.

The census taker apparently got months employed wrong, he listed almost everyone on this and immediately adjacent pages as unemployed 12 months out of year. On a later page he struck out a page full of 12 month entries, leaving no entries.

The census taker appears to have got some of the birth places wrong, need to check another census to confirm.1
