Summary*On Sarah (Sally) Merritt and Family:

Sarah/Sally (Thornton) Merritt lived her early life in Sampson County, North Carolina, and later in Baker County Georgia. She married Gabriel Merritt (born before 1784, died 1820) of Sampson County when she was around age 16 and they had two children together between 1816 and 1819. Gabriel's 1820 will identifies her as Sally, and names the children, son Wright and daughter Tempy Jane. After Gabriel's death Sarah had a son David Thornton Merritt in 1823, and a daughter Katherine (Kitty) Merritt in 1827. Their fathers are not known. In 1830, still in Sampson County, Sarah had a son Jacob Henry Merritt, and a Bastardy Bond names a Henry Irwin as father. She had another son, Garrison, in 1833 (presumed her child).

In 1836 Sarah and her children moved to Thomas County, Georgia, and in a couple of years to Baker County, Georgia. In the 1850 Baker County census Sarah Merritt was listed as age 50 and head of a household that included Henry and Garrison Merritt, Thomas Tipton, husband of the presumed deceased Tempe Jane Merritt Tipton, children presumed of Thomas and Tempe Jane, and Nancy Durrance and children, including Angeline Woodcock. Angeline would marry Jacob Henry Merritt within the year. Sons Wright Merritt, David, and Kitty Ann Merritt, with their families, were neighbors. A Lewis Bowen was a neighbor, who along with the Merritt adults was reported born in Sampson County.

Sarah died in 1855.

DNA tests of descendants show that Henry Merritt and Garrison Merritt were not matches to each other and so had different fathers. The Merritt Family Y-DNA Project includes tests of male descendants of Henry Merritt and one of Garrison Merritt, the presumed brothers. None of these descendants match any other Merritt descendants in including the more than a dozen testers who report themselves as descendants of the known Sampson County Merritt lines, among them the Capt Robert Merritt line. Assuming that the testers have accurately traced their Merritt lines and correctly identified their earliest known Merritt male ancestor, then Henry and Garrison are not related to the other known Sampson County Merritts, nor are they related to any tested Merritts.

Y-DNA test results show that the Jacob Henry Merritt descendants, while not a match to any other Merritts, are matches to a Bowen descendant, a Balkcom descendant (this researcher), a Russell descendant, and a Henderson descendant. In North Carolina between 1790 and 1830, Merritt families, Bowens, and Balkcoms were close neighbors in southeast Sampson County and southwest Duplin County.

The Y-DNA matches show that the common ancestor of the current day Balkcom family and the Jacob Henry Merritt descandants is very likely a Bowen or an Irwin male in the 1800-1830 time period.2

(Heir) Will3 June 1820(Testator) Gabriel Merritt; Sampson County, North Carolina, USA; Gabriel Merritt's will names his wife Sally, son Wright, daughter Tempy Jane. Brother Patrick is named executor. Witnessed by John Bryan and David Merritt. In a petition to the court in February 1821, after Gabriel's death, wife Sally declared that the amount provided her (165 acres, goods, and a slave) was insufficient and that she was entitled to dower, identifying specific land.3

Residence*Several members of Sarah's family originally from Sampson County NC were residing as neighbors in Baker County Georgia in 1850. They were farmers, and based on the assessed value of their land owned farms of about equal size. Sarah Merritt, Henry Merritt, David Merritt, Wright Merritt, Kitty Ann Tipton. Lewis Bowenof Sampson County was also a neighbor.

Thomas Tipton married Sarah's daughter Tempy Jane in 1836 but Tempy Jane was not present in this census. One researcher reports that she died in childbirth. The Tipton children in the household are inferred as Thomas' and Tempy Jane's. Kitty Merritt Tipton lived separately next door with two young children. Without knowing the reason for these living arrangements, it may be that Kitty married Thomas after Tempy Jane's death and that the two young children living with her are theirs.1

(Resident) Census16 December 1850(Head of Household) Sarah Thornton; household 14, District 3, census page 3, Baker County, Georgia, USA; "Sarah Merritt", head, age 50, real estate value $900, born Sampson Co NC;

"Angeline Woodcock" age 15, born Bulloch Co GA (Henry Merritt and Angeline Woodcock married within the year);
"Cordelia Smith" age 3, born Early Co Ga.

Neighbors: Sarah's son Wright Merritt (b1816) born Sampson County, and family; Kitty Ann Tipton (b1828) and family of Sampson County (assumed Sarah's daughter); her son David Merritt (b1824) and family of Sampson County; Lewis Bowen (b. 1815) of Sampson County.

Without knowing the reason for these living arrangements, it may be that Kitty married Thomas after Tempy Jane's death and that the two young children living with her are theirs.2
