Journal*Christopher S. Baldwin; Christopher Baldwin (1807-1850) and wife Elizabeth of Stewart County, Georgia, are the earliest known Baldwin ancestors of the southwest Oklahoma Balkcoms and Baldwins. Christopher and his brothers and sister were by one account orphaned at an early age and came to Georgia from Tennessee. First official records found so far show Christopher and his brothers Augustus and William as young heads of household in Randolph County, Georgia in 1830. Christopher and Elizabeth had married in around 1828. Christopher was well known in Stewart County and was Justice of the Peace for a time. He died at the age of 43, and Elizabeth and many of their chidlren moved to Dale County Alabama within a couple of years. Bryant F. Baldwin, one of their sons, married Josephine Mathews, and their daughter Ida Lucinda Baldwin married John Ira Balkcom. John and Ida moved to Oklahoma in the early 1900s.

Hester (?)1,2

F, #890, b. before 1765, d. before May 1843

Last Edited 26 Jan 2009

Name VariationBalkcum
Journal*John Balkcom; John Balkcom (Balcom, Balkcum) and Hester married in probably 1799. This was likely the second marriage for both. It appears that Hester and John had no children together. John died in 1803. Estate records show the dower laid off to Hester included the house and improvements, and other assets went to his children Willie (later Wiley) and Tombsin who were named as orphans. They were identified as in the care of Hester for which she is paid by the estate. Both children were in her household in 1810, or at least it contained children of that age along with others unidentified.

Hester names two of her own children in her 1843 will, daughters Nancy Balkcum and Mariah, last name not given. Both were born after John's death. Interestingly, Hester gave Nancy and Mariah the name Balkcum, suggesting that she did not remarry after John's death. Daughter Nancy kept the Balkcum name throughout her life and gave her children the Balkcum name so she also may not have married. In addition to Nancy and Mariah, Hester had at least one other child based on her listing of grandchildren in her will, some of whom were not children of either Nancy or Mariah. This parent was likely born to Hester before her marriage to John since one of the unatttributed grandchildren was born in 1818. It seems likely that William Balkom age 26-44 in the 1820 Duplin County census is one these parents but it seems likely there is another unknown child of Hester. A woman of Hester's age was in William's 1820 household, and a review of neighbors indicates this may have been the original John/Hester household although that requires more work.

A note on surname spelling: "Balkcum" was used by Hester's descendants, or at least those who lived in Sampson County and surrounding region in North Carolina, while "Balkcom" was used by John's son Wiley when he later lived in Alabama. Most of the Georgia and Alabama Balkcoms came to use the spelling Balkcom.

Researcher Lisa Y. Henderson, a descendant of Nancy Balkcum, collaborated and made major contributions in the research of the Balkcums and descendants in North Carolina. My own ancestor James E. Balkcom b1807 in North Carolina was closely associated with John and Hester Balkcom but was apparently not a child of either.3
(Witness) JournalJohn Balkcom, Lemuel Balkcom; Harman (b c1822) and Lemuel Balkcum (b c1821) are named as grandchildren in the 1843 will of Hester Balkcum. They appear in the same clause of the will and are provided identical small amounts (one common Bible each, or money sufficient to purchase the same). Their appearance together may have been because of closeness of age or some other association but they were unlikely to have been brothers. Harman is known as son of Hester's daughter Nancy, per Nancy's 1853 will which does not mention Lemuel. I call Lemuel the son of an unknown parent, and John the son of a different unknown parent. Hester's will, in another clause, names John Balkcum as grandson and makes the same provision of one common Bible. Because of this separation of John in will language I call him not a brother of Lemuel or Harman. Lemuel could be a son of William Balkcom who I call a son of Hester Balkcum. In William's 1820 household there were no young males so John (b c1818) is likely not son of William.
Birth*before 17651810 census places her birth before 1765; 1830 census places it between 1771-1780.1,2,4,5
Marriage*say 1789a probable first marriage, date estimated
Married Namesay 1799Balkcom1,2
Marriage*say 1799John Balkcom; North Carolina, USA, John's second marriage, very likely Hester's second marriage. Court records name Hester as widow of John Balcom. Date is estimated based on the birthdates of Wylie and Tombsin Balkcom, known children of John and not children of Hester.1,2,6,7
Comment*1800John Balkcom; 2 males under 10 in 1800, one Wiley, other unknown. Also 2 females under 10, 1 Tombsin, other unknown. Estate records in 1813, on Tombsin's death, state that John left two minor orphans on his death. The guardian of the minors, John Bryan, paid Hester $190. for maintaining the minors. Wiley and Tombsin are confirmed as brother and sister. Hester is confirmed as widow of John. It is strongly implied that Wiley and Tombsin are not children Hester. The other two children, unnamed in estate records but counted in the 1800 census, could be Hester's or John's children from an earlier marriage. They would seem more likely to be children of Hester since John's estate records don't name them.

"Appointed John Bryan Guardian to Willie Balcom and Tomzin Balcom, Minor Orphans of John Balcom, dec'd, he gave bond of 1000 pounds; Ordered he take their Estate into Possession." "Appointed Aaron Williams, William Stoakes & John Stallings a Committee to settle the accounts of Estate of John Balcom, dec'd with James Matthis the Adm'r & Reporte to Court." "Ordered John Bryan, Guardian to Orphans of John Balcom, dec'd, pay Hester Balcom $30 out of Interest of said Orphans money in his hands for each year she has maintained said two Orphan Children." This record indicates that Hester was not the mother of the two children.10
