Military15 March 1862CSA, 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Co A, Alabama, USA; the Alabama Archives database, and the NARA Confederate Soldiers Index, have a William J Balkcom listed in two units. For now I am saying they are two different people. The William J. Baldwin in the 37th Regiment is listed as age 29 at enlistment, in 1862, a couple of years too old to be the William J. Baldwin, son of Christopher Baldwin.

Confederate Soldiers Index has a William J. Baldwin in
"William J. Baldwin, Co A 37th Alabama Infantry, Private";
"William J. Baldwin, Co E Alabama Infantry, Private (Orig under W. J. Baldwin")

The 37th Infantry site has this:

Birth*circa 1850Alabama, USA1
(Witness) Census23 July 1860James E. Balkcom, AL Dale Co Census 1860; Newton Post Office, Dale County, Alabama, USA; "James Balkcom", age 53, farming, born in NC, real estate value was listed at $1500, personal estate at $700. The households of John W. Balkcom and wife Nancy age 19 (newly married) and Daniel Murphy (with wife Elizabeth and a 12 year old male Milton Murphy) were adjacent. Neither of the other families showed land holdings so it's likely that they had houses on the land of James Balkcom.

Also listed on the same census page were Lewis Deal and wife Nancy J. Brannon Deal, with family. Nancy J. Brannon (person ID#1314) was the oldest daughter of Rosier Brannon and Anzilla Galloway, and sister to Rose Ann Brannon.

Complete household:
"James Balkcom" as above;
"Mary Balkcom", age 44, born in NC, read/write no;
"Selista J. Balkcom", female age 20, born Georgia, read/write yes;
"Benjamin Balkcom", age 17, laborer, born Georgia, read/write yes;
"Ivey Balkcom", male age 14, born Alabama, attending school, read/write yes;
"Brantley Balkcom", male age 12 born Alabama, attending school, read/write yes;
"Albert Balkcom", age 10, born Alabama, read/write yes;
"Delilah Balkcom, female age 8, born Alabama, attending school, read/write yes;
"Pricilla Balkcom", female age 6, born Alabama, attending school;
"Neissa Balkcom", female age 4, born Alabama;
"Ransom Balkcom", male age 3, born Alabama;
"Joseph D. Balkcom", male age 19, farm laborer, born Alabama, read/write yes;
"Cinda Balkcom", female age 18 born Alabama, read/write yes (Joseph's wife);
"James A. Balkcom", age 23, school teacher, born Georgia, read/write yes (note: he was listed last in the large household even though the oldest. Birth dates and states support that he was the oldest child of James and Mary).2
Marriage*between 1870 and 1880Sarah Holland; Alabama, USA3
(Witness) Census27 July 1870James E. Balkcom, AL Dale Co Census 1870; Beat No. 9, Echo, Dale County, Alabama, USA; "James Balkcum" age 63, occupation farmer and hatter, born North Carolina, real estate $1100, personal $350.

Household:

"C. J.", female age 31, works in house, born Georgia;
"Albert" age 21, works in farm, born Alabama;
"Delila" age 19, works in farm, born Alabama;
"Priscilla" age 17, works in farm, born Alabama;
"J. H.", male age 14, works in farm, born Alabama;
"J. A.", female age 7, born Alabama;
"Middleton", male age 11, born Alabama.
The adults were listed as reading and writing.4
Census*18 June 1880AL Henry Co Census 1880; hh#64, ED#82, Beat 6, pg 31, stamped pg 611, Henry County, Alabama, USA; household:
"Albert Balkum", head, age 28, farm laborer, born in AL, parents born in SC;
'Sarah Balkum", wife, age 28, housekeeper, born in AL, parents born in GA;
"Joseph Balkum", age 7 born in AL, parents born in GA;
"Archie Balkum", age 5, born in AL, parents born in GA.
Note absence of son Tarrell.

Note SC birthplace of Albert's parents. If accurate then James and Mary Balkcom are not his parents. On the other hand I've not run across SC Balkcoms so this may be an error. Albert's age 28 is too young by a year or two to match the Albert in the earlier census, in household of James and Mary. Children birthplaces listed as GA, possibly indicating that Sarah went to parents' home for the births.5

"Albert Balkum", head, age 28, farm laborer, born in AL, parents born in SC;

"Joseph Balkum", age 7 born in AL, parents born in GA;

Children birthplaces listed as GA, possibly indicating that Sarah went to parents' home for the births.3

"James Balkcom" as above;
"Mary Balkcom", age 44, born in NC, read/write no;

"James A. Balkcom", age 23, school teacher, born Georgia, read/write yes (note: he was listed last in the large household even though the oldest. Birth dates and states support that he was the oldest child of James and Mary).5
Militarycirca 186237th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company A, Alabama, USA; Regiment was organized at Auburn, in the spring of 1862, under the requisition of President Jefferson Davis for 12,000 more Alabamans. The members were recruited from Barbour, Chambers, Henry, Macon, Pike, Russell, and Tallapoosa counties. Benjamin was captured 4 December, 1862, at Water Valley, Mississippi.3,6
Death*27 January 1863Alton POW Prison, Alton, Illinois, USA; died as a POW from exposure, about a month after his capture. According to the reference: " Conditions in the prison were harsh and the mortality rate was above average for a Union prison. Hot, humid summers and cold Midwestern winters took a heavy toll on prisoners already weakened by poor nourishment and inadequate clothing. The prison was overcrowded much of the time and sanitary facilities were inadequate. Pneumonia and dysentery were common killers but contagious diseases such as smallpox and rubella were the most feared. When smallpox infection became alarmingly high in the winter of 1862 and spring of 1863, a quarantine hospital was located on an island across the Mississippi River from the prison."3,6
