Comment* Baucom book identifies James Arnold as son of James E. Balkcom and Mary Balkcom. The 1860 Dale County census seems to support this since James Arnold lives in their household. But the 1900 Geneva County census lists Georgia as birthplace of both James Arnold's parents, which if accurate means James E. and Mary could not be his parents.

James E. Balkcom & Mary Murphy

JournalIntro* Mary (Polly) Murphy; James Balkcom and Mary (Polly) (maiden name probably Murphy) of Duplin County, North Carolina are the earliest identified Balkcom ancestors of the Oklahoma Balkcom line. James' parents are unknown and will I think be difficult to prove. I believe that he descends from the Alexander Balkcom line in Providence, Rhode Island in the 1600s. See the main page of this site www.pbalkcom.com/gwb for my reasoning. Also see there a detailed biography of James. I believe that his wife Mary is a Murphy from the Duplin County, NC area but I have no definitive proof.

James Balkcom married Mary in around 1832 and moved to Lowndes County, Georgia and in a few years on to Dale County, Alabama. Their son Brantley had a son John Ira Balkcom who shortly after his own marriage moved his family to Oklahoma.
Birth* 1 January 1807 North Carolina, USA, Tombstone lists 7 January 1807. Birthplace from 1900 census of son Brantley.1,2
Event-Misc* 12 May 1827 Wiley Balkcom; Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, appeared in Sampson County Court Minutes - "Appointed Matthew White for the road from the Duplin County line to Lisbon Bridge with the following hands to work: Rebecca Pridgen's hands, Moses Pridgen's hands, Wm Pridgen, Abram Blanton, Moses Blanton, Jonas Green, Thomas Coggin, James Evans Jr, Bryan Lee and hands, George Alderman, Alfred Taylor, Samuel Ward & hands, Willie Balcomb, James Balcomb and Nathan Johnson and hands." Todd Johnson at Johnston County Heritage Society says that all able bodied men were required to work on roads and rivers, and they would work the area where they lived. Two Balcombs being listed together probably means they lived in the same household or adjacent to each other.3
Marriage* say 1832 Mary (Polly) Murphy; Marriage date a guess based on ages. Citations are to support Murphy as last name of Mary (Polly). Researcher Slay refers to Mary Murphy as wife of James Balkcom, as does an entry in IGI.4,5,6
Migration before 1836 Lowndes County, Georgia, USA, date estimated based on birthplaces of children7
Cen-Head* 1840 GA Lowndes Co Census 1840; Lowndes County, Georgia, USA, having three males and four females living in his household. This accounts for James E. and wife Mary, sons John W. and James A., and daughter Colista. Two females are unaccounted for. Wylie Balkcom and Daniel Murphy households are very close by. Males 200001, females 30001: 2 males under 5, 1 30-39 (James); 3 females under 5, 1 20-29 (Mary Polly).8
Migration* circa 1845 Dale County, Alabama, USA, Date estimated based on children birth locations.
Comment* 1850 unfound in 1850 census Dale, Lowndes, Henry
Land* 11 January 1858 SESE Section 4/ Township 5-N Range 26-E, Dale County, Alabama, USA, Purchased 160 acres of public land from the Elba Land Office, through a land patent, at $.25 an acre for a total of $40. His application and payment for purchase were dated October 19, 1855, from the record on file at National Archives. Referenced to the St Stephens Meridian:
SESE Section 4/ Township 5-N Range 26-E;
W½SW 3/ 5-N 26-E;
SWNW 3/ 5-N 26-E.

Land Patents were issued in Dale County to Josiah Balkcom (son of Wiley) and Wiley Balkcom on the same day.9,10
Occupation* 1860 Dale County, Alabama, USA, farmer11
(Witness) Cen-Enum 23 July 1860 Brantley Balkcom, AL Dale Co Census 1860; Newton Post Office, Dale County, Alabama, USA, 12 years old, born in Alabama, living in a farm household with parents James and Mary, 8 siblings, Joseph D. Balkcom, Cinda Balkcom, and James A. Balkcom. He was listed as attending school.12
Cen-Head* 23 July 1860 AL Dale Co Census 1860; Newton Post Office, Dale County, Alabama, USA, "James Balkcom", age 53, farming, born in NC, living with wife Mary, 9 children, and 3 other Balkcoms. Real estate value was listed at $1500, personal estate at $700. The households of John W. Balkcom and wife Nancy age 19 (newly married) and Daniel Murphy (with wife Elizabeth and a 12 year old male Michon) were counted adjacent. Neither of the other families showed land holdings so it's likely that they had houses on the land of James Balkcom.

Also listed on the same census page were Lewis Deal and wife Nancy J. Brannon Deal, with family. Nancy J. Brannon (person ID#1314) was the oldest daughter of Rosier Brannon and Anzilla Galloway, and sister to Rose Ann Brannon.13

Land 12 February 1881 5N/26E, Section 4, NW 1/4 of SE 1/4, Dale County, Alabama, USA, James (believed James E. but conceivably James K., son of Wiley) bought 40 acres. Purchase price was $1.25 an acre, totalling about $40.00. Purchase was under the Homestead Act of Congress of 1862, entitled "An act to secure homesteads to actual settlers on the public domain." The land was adjacent to land James E. already owned in the section. Wiley and son Josiah had land nearby from 1858 purchases. It seems unlikely that this is James K. since he doesn't appear in a Dale County Census after 1850.

James Balkcom applied for this land December 27, 1873 under application No 5790. In the application, he asserted that he was over age 20, head of family. He marked out the phrase on the application "that I have a bonafide improvement and reside on the tract applied for". Note that James corrected the spelling of his last name from "Balcom" to "Balkcom" on the documents.9,23

Father   Ichabod Balcom I2 b. 26 Jan 1740, d. 2 Jun 1789
Mother   Sarah H. Boyd2 b. a 1735

Name Variation Balcom2
JournalIntro* Hester (?); There is much uncertainty as to the children of Hester Balkcom and John Balkcom. Two children are known - Wylie and Tombsin are named in John's estate records in 1803. Records on John are silent on William, Mariah, and Nancy. Hester Balkcom's 1843 will names, among others, daughter "Nancy Balkcum" and "grandson James Lucien Balkcum (son of my daughter Mariah), granddaughter Mary Ellen Johnson (daughter of my daughter Mariah)". As for William, he was head of household in 1820 Sampson County, apparently in the original John/Hester Balkcom house based on review of neighbors. A woman assumed to be Hester, certainly of her age, lived in that household. Based on a close look at the records, but without proof, I call William and Mariah Balkcom the children of Hester, born before Hester married John and given the Balkcom name on that marriage. I call Nancy Balkcom the wife of William, and so a daughter-in-law and not daughter.
Birth* between 1755 and 1774 3,4
Occupation* Hatter.
I haven't found the records, but from one of the Balkcom newletters: "Court records now in hand reveal that John left a sizeable estate to his wife Hester, son Wylie (Willie) and daughter Tombsin and he was indeed a "hatter" and the tools and his hat making materials (wool and furs) which were auctioned off confirm it."3
Census* 1790 not found
Marriage* say 1795 Hester (?); USA, Court records name Hester as widow of John Balcom. Date is a guess based on the birthdate of Wylie and Tombsin Balkcom, known children of John and Hester. I suspect this is a second marriage of either John or Hester, or both.5,6,7,8
Event-Misc* 18 January 1796 Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, ordered, with 30 other men, by the Duplin County Court to "be hands to open and repair said New Road." The road referred to was "... a Public Road near Rockfish .... as follows: Beginning near William Murphys & leading from thence across Mr. Goffs Beverdam below the Marsh & from thence the most direct way to the main Road...". William Beven was appointed Overseer, and three Alderman's were also listed.9
Event-Misc 15 May 1798 Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, named as witness in deed transfer of 6 acres from John Goff to Jonathan Parker,10
Event-Misc 12 November 1798 Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, fined for not attending as a juryman when summoned,10
Land* 14 February 1799 Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, The seller was Elias James, 100 acres, proved by Jonathan Parker.10
Land 15 May 1799 Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, The sale was for 232 acres to Elias James, proved by Tabatha Parker.10
Comment* 1800 Hester (?); 2 males under 10 in 1800, one Wiley, other unknown. Also 2 females under 10, 1 Tombsin, other unknown. Estate records in 1813, on Tombsin's death, state that John left two minor orphans on his death. The guardian of the minors, John Bryan, paid Hester $190. for maintaining the minors. Wiley and Tombsin are confirmed as brother and sister, and children of Hester. Hester is confirmed as widow of John. It doesn't specifically state, but strongly implies, that Wiley and Tombsin are children also of John. The other two children, unnamed in estate records but counted in the 1800 census, could be Hester's or John's children from an earlier marriage. They would seem more likely to be children of Hester since John's estate records don't name them.
Cen-Head* 1800 NC Duplin Co Census 1800; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, "John Balkcom", age between 26 and 44. Listed with 1 female age 26-44 (say wf Hester), 2 males under age 10 (Wylie age 2, and say William a few years older), and 2 females under age 10 (Tombsin age 2 or so, and probably Mariah age 1 or so, but possibly Nancy). Adjacent to household of Timothy Murphy.11

Association* 1800 Timothy Murphy; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, John and Hester Balkcom lived adjacent to Timothy Murphy
Land 14 May 1800 Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, The sale was for 232 acres, from John Goff, proved by Thomas Parker.10
Event-Misc 19 October 1801 Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, appointed "Overseer of Road in room of William Swetman & have same District & hands"8
Death* 1803 North Carolina, USA, The newsletter states that he left only two legal heirs, a son, Wile (Wiley or Willie) and Tombsin (a daughter).3

Comment 1907 Beckham County, Oklahoma, USA, Beckham, Jackson, and Greer Counties were created out of the old Greer County.

"1896, March 16. Greer County decision made in United States vs. Texas

Due to an error by the surveyor of the region, and a mistake in indentifying the main channel of the Red River, the southwest corner of Oklahoma, the area between the Red River, the North Fork of the Red River, and the 100th Meridian was claimed by Texas and designated as Greer County in 1860, named for John A. Greer, a Texas lieutenant governor. Greer County, Texas, organized by ranchers in 1886, included all of the current Greer, Jackson, and Harmon Counties and that part of Beckham County south of the North Fork River. The Supreme Court declared in United States vs. Texas, 162 U.S. 1 (1896) Greer County to be a part of Oklahoma Territory. The land office at the county seat of Mangum opened for business by July 2, 1897. Prior settlers of Greer County were permitted to file on the quarter sections they lived on and an adjoining quarter sections where they already had improvements. Within a week 100 homestead entries had been filed, 33 applicants filing for their additional quarter.

At the Constitutional Convention 1907, the area was divided among Beckham County, Jackson County, and Greer County. After statehood 1909, Harmon County was created out of the southwestern portion of Greer County."
