Name VariationBalkcum
(Witness) JournalJohn Balkcom, Lemuel Balkcom; Harman (b c1822) and Lemuel Balkcum (b c1821) are named as grandchildren in the 1843 will of Hester Balkcum. They appear in the same clause of the will and are provided identical small amounts (one common Bible each, or money sufficient to purchase the same). Their appearance together may have been because of closeness of age or some other association but they were unlikely to have been brothers. Harman is known as son of Hester's daughter Nancy, per Nancy's 1853 will which does not mention Lemuel. I call Lemuel the son of an unknown parent, and John the son of a different unknown parent. Hester's will, in another clause, names John Balkcum as grandson and makes the same provision of one common Bible. Because of this separation of John in will language I call him not a brother of Lemuel or Harman. Lemuel could be a son of William Balkcom who I call a son of Hester Balkcum. In William's 1820 household there were no young males so John (b c1818) is likely not son of William.
Birth*circa 1822Sampson County, North Carolina, USA; Civil War military record shows him age 40 at enlistment in 1862, but his mother would have been very young for a birth in 1822.1,2,3,6

It provides miscellaneous property to "granddaughter Mary Ellen Johnson, daughter of my daughter Mariah", and to grandsons John Balkcum, Harman Balkcum, and Lemuel Balkcum. Balkcom, AL Dale Co Census 1860; Newton Post Office, Dale County, Alabama, USA; "James Balkcom", age 53, farming, born in NC, real estate value was listed at $1500, personal estate at $700. The households of John W. Balkcom and wife Nancy age 19 (newly married) and Daniel Murphy (with wife Elizabeth and a 12 year old male Milton Murphy) were adjacent. Neither of the other families showed land holdings so it's likely that they had houses on the land of James Balkcom.

Also listed on the same census page were Lewis Deal and wife Nancy J. Brannon Deal, with family. Nancy J. Brannon (person ID#1314) was the oldest daughter of Rosier Brannon and Anzilla Galloway, and sister to Rose Ann Brannon.

Comment*Baucom book identifies James Arnold as son of James E. Balkcom and Mary Balkcom. The 1860 Dale County census supports this since James Arnold lives in their household.
Birth*25 August 1836Georgia, USA4,1
(Witness) Census23 July 1860James E.

Descendants of James E. Balkcom & Mary Murphy
Journal*Mary (Polly) Murphy; James Balkcom and Mary (Polly) (maiden name probably Murphy) of Duplin County, North Carolina are the earliest known Balkcom ancestors of the Oklahoma Balkcom line. James' parents are unknown and will I think be difficult to prove. It's likely that he descends from the Alexander Balkcom line in Providence, Rhode Island in the 1600s. See the main page of this site www.pbalkcom.com/gwb for my reasoning and for a detailed biography of James. Indications are that his wife Mary is a Murphy from the Duplin County area of NC but proof has not been found.
James moved to Lowndes County, Georgia, some time before 1838 and in a few years on to Dale County, Alabama where he bought considerable land and farmed. Their son Brantley had a son John Ira Balkcom who shortly after his own marriage moved his family to Oklahoma.
Birth*7 January 1807North Carolina, USA; birthplace from 1900 census of son Brantley, and Florida State Census 1885 of son James Arnold.1,2
Event*12 May 1827Wiley Balkcom; Sampson County, North Carolina, USA; appeared in Sampson County Court Minutes - "Appointed Matthew White for the road from the Duplin County line to Lisbon Bridge with the following hands to work: Rebecca Pridgen's hands, Moses Pridgen's hands, Wm Pridgen, Abram Blanton, Moses Blanton, Jonas Green, Thomas Coggin, James Evans Jr, Bryan Lee and hands, George Alderman, Alfred Taylor, Samuel Ward & hands, Willie Balcomb, James Balcomb and Nathan Johnson and hands."3
Marriage*October 1835Mary (Polly) Murphy; Georgia, USA; marriage license for "James Becham and Mary Murphy" dated 13 October, 1835. It's likely that this Becham is James Balkcom but this is unconfirmed. This is about the time that James Balkcom came to Lowndes County, not far from the Thomas County line. It's also about the time he and Mary married. According to the census there were a number of Becham families in Georgia's Crawford and Stewart Counties. No Bechams are listed in Lowndes or Thomas in the census and none in Lowndes tax lists through 1844. However, a Hiram Becham is listed in an 1866 Thomas County marriage record.

Cemetery citation is to support Murphy as last name of Mary (Polly).4,5,6

Cen-Head*1840GA Lowndes Co Census 1840; Lowndes County, Georgia, USA; having three males and four females living in his household. This accounts for James E. and wife Mary, sons John W. and James A., and daughter Colista. Two females are unaccounted for. Wylie Balkcom and Daniel Murphy households are very close by. Males 200001, females 30001: 2 males under 5, 1 30-39 (James); 3 females under 5, 1 20-29 (Mary Polly).12
(Witness) Residence1840Wiley Balkcom; Lowndes County, Georgia, USA; Daniel and Elizabeth Murphy, James and Mary Balkcom, and Wiley and Esther Balkcom lived adjacent to each other in 1840 according to the census. Only Wiley owned land according to the tax list. It was located near Ocopiloa Creek, also known as Okapilco Creek, about 4 miles East-SE of current day Quitman, Georgia. The land was then in Lowndes County, but later became part of Brooks County when it was formed in 1858 (see attached map for location of Wiley's land).11

Land12 February 18815N/26E, Section 4, NW 1/4 of SE 1/4, Dale County, Alabama, USA; James (believed James E. but conceivably James K., son of Wiley) bought 40 acres. Purchase price was $1.25 an acre, totalling about $40.00. Purchase was under the Homestead Act of Congress of 1862, entitled "An act to secure homesteads to actual settlers on the public domain." The land was adjacent to land James E. already owned in the section. Wiley and son Josiah had land nearby from 1858 purchases. It seems unlikely that this is James K. since he doesn't appear in a Dale County Census after 1850.

James Balkcom applied for this land December 27, 1873 under application No 5790. In the application, he asserted that he was over age 20, head of family. He marked out the phrase on the application "that I have a bonafide improvement and reside on the tract applied for". Note that James corrected the spelling of his last name from "Balcom" to "Balkcom" on the documents.15,21
