Inherited* after 1803 North Carolina, USA, According to the newsletter, Wiley and Tombsin, his sister, inherited the family plantation when their father John died. Tombsin died within ten years and so the land went all to Wiley. This consisted of about 250 acres on the Duplin - Sampson County lines. Wiley lived there with his mother for 29 years after John died.2

"Appointed John Bryan Guardian to Willie Balcom and Tomzin Balcom, Minor Orphans of John Balcom, dec'd, he gave bond of 1000 pounds; Ordered he take their Estate into Possession." "Appointed Aaron Williams, William Stoakes & John Stallings a Committee to settle the accounts of Estate of John Balcom, dec'd with James Matthis the Adm'r & Reporte to Court." "Ordered John Bryan, Guardian to Orphans of John Balcom, dec'd, pay Hester Balcom $30 out of Interest of said Orphans money in his hands for each year she has maintained said two Orphan Children." This seems to indicate that Hester may not have been the mother of Wiley and Tombsin.3

Balkcom; Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, appeared in Sampson County Court Minutes - "Appointed Matthew White for the road from the Duplin County line to Lisbon Bridge with the following hands to work: Rebecca Pridgen's hands, Moses Pridgen's hands, Wm Pridgen, Abram Blanton, Moses Blanton, Jonas Green, Thomas Coggin, James Evans Jr, Bryan Lee and hands, George Alderman, Alfred Taylor, Samuel Ward & hands, Willie Balcomb, James Balcomb and Nathan Johnson and hands." Todd Johnson at Johnston County Heritage Society says that all able bodied men were required to work on roads and rivers, and they would work the area where they lived. Two Balcombs being listed together probably means they lived in the same household or adjacent to each other.6

Willie Balcomb submits and is fined 6 pence and stands committed until fine and costs are paid. Nole Prosequi, as to Bowen."||Lewis Bowen and Wiley Balkcom were neighbors. Nole Prosequi - not prosecuted. This must have been considered a minor fight given the size of the fine, although Wiley was found the guilty party.6

Comment* some say this William could be the same person as Wiley Balkcom, but William's age in the 1820 census is not consistent with Wylie's birth from 1840-1860 census (William b1776-94, Wiley b1798). I believe William and Wylie are two different people, and they are sons of either John and Hester Balkcom. William may be Hester's son from an earlier marriage. 
Birth* say 1792 between 1776 and 1794 per 1820 census, between 1791 and 1800 per 1800 census, assuming William is one of the u10 males in the John Balkcom household in 1800.3

Cen-Head* 1820 NC Duplin Co Census 1820; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, "William Balkom", male age 26 to 45 (000010 20021). Females 2 u10, 2 26-45 (probably wife (either Nancy #2002 or Mariah #2003)), and the other sister or half-sister Mariah or Nancy, and 1 over 45 (probably mother Hester).

I say the female over 45 is Hester, but Hester in 1810 had 5 males under 25 in the household, 2 of which were under 10. William was the only male in the 1820 household. A complete neighbor comparison will have to be made between 1810 and 1820, but it appears that some William Balkom neighbors match those of Hester Balkcom in 1810 so this may be the original John and Hester home.5

The Baucom Book does indicate a son before 1810 gone by 1830, unnamed. This would be the u10 male listed in the 1810 census, but who is unnamed in the will.
