| Father | John Balkcom2,3 b. bt 1755 - 1774, d. 1803 | |
| Mother | Hester (?)4,3 b. b 1765, d. b May 1843 |
| Birth* | circa 1798 | Sampson County, North Carolina, USA1 |
| Inherited* | after 1803 | North Carolina, USA, According to the newsletter, Wiley and Tombsin, his sister, inherited the family plantation when their father John died. Tombsin died within ten years and so the land went all to Wiley. This consisted of about 250 acres on the Duplin - Sampson County lines. Wiley lived there with his mother for 29 years after John died.2 |
| Event-Misc* | 21 January 1806 | Tombsin Balkcom; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, named as orphan children of John Balcom: "Appointed John Bryan Guardian to Willie Balcom and Tomzin Balcom, Minor Orphans of John Balcom, dec'd, he gave bond of 1000 pounds; Ordered he take their Estate into Possession." "Appointed Aaron Williams, William Stoakes & John Stallings a Committee to settle the accounts of Estate of John Balcom, dec'd with James Matthis the Adm'r & Reporte to Court." "Ordered John Bryan, Guardian to Orphans of John Balcom, dec'd, pay Hester Balcom $30 out of Interest of said Orphans money in his hands for each year she has maintained said two Orphan Children." This seems to indicate that Hester may not have been the mother of Wiley and Tombsin.3 Witness: Hester (?) |
| Land | 1825 | Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, The sale consisted of 23 acres, Big B Dam, to John Hufham, as registered by deed.5 |
| Event-Misc* | 12 May 1827 | James E. Balkcom; Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, appeared in Sampson County Court Minutes - "Appointed Matthew White for the road from the Duplin County line to Lisbon Bridge with the following hands to work: Rebecca Pridgen's hands, Moses Pridgen's hands, Wm Pridgen, Abram Blanton, Moses Blanton, Jonas Green, Thomas Coggin, James Evans Jr, Bryan Lee and hands, George Alderman, Alfred Taylor, Samuel Ward & hands, Willie Balcomb, James Balcomb and Nathan Johnson and hands." Todd Johnson at Johnston County Heritage Society says that all able bodied men were required to work on roads and rivers, and they would work the area where they lived. Two Balcombs being listed together probably means they lived in the same household or adjacent to each other.6 |
| Event-Misc* | 20 August 1827 | Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, appeared in Sampson County Court Minutes - "Patrols: Ordered Samuel Ward, Willie Balcomb, Joab Johnson, Rice Matthis, Gibson Register and David Matthis be patrols in Captt Lee's District."6 |
| Event-Misc | 18 November 1828 | Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, an unknown Balcomb appeared in Sampson County Court Minutes - "Judgment recalled: Ordered Thomas I. Faison, clerk, give up a judgment filed in his office "Pilgrim Balcomb to the use of Daniel Merritt vs Bryant Lee"."6 |
| Event-Misc | 17 February 1829 | Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, appeared in Sampson County Court Minutes - "No. 22 State vs Willie Balcomb & Lewis Bowen. Affray. Willie Balcomb submits and is fined 6 pence and stands committed until fine and costs are paid. Nole Prosequi, as to Bowen."||Lewis Bowen and Wiley Balkcom were neighbors. Nole Prosequi - not prosecuted. This must have been considered a minor fight given the size of the fine, although Wiley was found the guilty party.6 |
| Cen-Head* | 1830 | NC Duplin Co Census 1830; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, "Willy Bawkum", 100001 - 000101, one male under five (probably Josiah), one male 30 - 40 (Wiley); one female 15 - 20 (possible relative or servant), and one female 30 - 40 (wife, Esther). Also listed are male slaves, two 10-24 and one 24-36. Adjacent households are Daniel Murphy, Polly Murphy, and several Matthews.7 Witness: Esther M. Mashburn Witness: Josiah Balkcom |
| Marriage* | Esther M. Mashburn1 | |
| Land* | 18 January 1832 | Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, to his guardian, John Bryan, and 23 acres to the other executor of the will, John Hufham. Supposedly, it was sold under some very unusual buyback terms. The newsletter conjectures that Wiley's mother, Hester, may have been the daughter or sister of one of these executors.2 |

| Comment* | some say this William could be the same person as Wiley Balkcom, but William's age in the 1820 census is not consistent with Wylie's birth from 1840-1860 census (William b1776-94, Wiley b1798). I believe William and Wylie are two different people, and they are sons of either John and Hester Balkcom. William may be Hester's son from an earlier marriage. | |
| Birth* | say 1792 | between 1776 and 1794 per 1820 census, between 1791 and 1800 per 1800 census, assuming William is one of the u10 males in the John Balkcom household in 1800.3 |
| Tax List* | 1817 | Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, "William Baukom(sp?)"4 |
| Cen-Head* | 1820 | NC Duplin Co Census 1820; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, "William Balkom", male age 26 to 45 (000010 20021). Females 2 u10, 2 26-45 (probably wife (either Nancy #2002 or Mariah #2003)), and the other sister or half-sister Mariah or Nancy, and 1 over 45 (probably mother Hester). I say the female over 45 is Hester, but Hester in 1810 had 5 males under 25 in the household, 2 of which were under 10. William was the only male in the 1820 household. A complete neighbor comparison will have to be made between 1810 and 1820, but it appears that some William Balkom neighbors match those of Hester Balkcom in 1810 so this may be the original John and Hester home.5 |

Bennett Baucom1
M, #1979, b. say 1785
| Last Edited | 13 Jun 2003 |
| Comment | Candidate for father of James E. Balkcom due to Johnston County location in 1810. But Bennett married in 1809 and apparently had a stable family. The Baucom Book does indicate a son before 1810 gone by 1830, unnamed. This would be the u10 male listed in the 1810 census, but who is unnamed in the will. | |
| Birth* | say 1785 | Wake County, North Carolina, USA, Census says 1765-84; Baucom Book estimates 17851,2 |
| Cen-Head* | 1810 | NC Johnston Co Census 1810; Johnston County, North Carolina, USA, "Baucum", males 1 26-44, 1 u10; female 1 16-25; 3 slaves1 |
| Comment* | Baucom Book has lots on Bennett Baucom of Johnston County in 1810. Son of John Baucom and Fanny Jordan of Wake County. Married 7 May 1809 in Wake County to Delilah Ann (Della/Dilly) Dunn. In 1820 and 1830 lived in Wake County alongside his father. | |
| Will* | 25 August 1832 | will recorded 4 Feb 1833 Carroll Co, TN. Names wife and children.2 |

| Comment* | Baucom book assigns to Nicholas Baucom side, as son of John Baucom. | |
| Comment | probably not our NC balkcom group | |
| Birth* | from 1754 to 1763 | Birthdate range is from census records and tax lists. James' appearance on the 1784 tax list would make him age 21 or older then. His appearance on the 1804 tax list would have made him age 21-50 then.1,3,4,5 |

| Comment | Guilford Co NC in 1800 per Baucom Book | |
| Tax List | 1804 | Johnston County, North Carolina, USA, "Jame Baucom", 375 acres, 1 white poll.12 |
| Comment | circa 1810 | possible, seemingly unlikely, father of James E. based on age and location Johnston Co., but not after 1790? |
| Comment | Baucom book has census locations - 1800 Guilford Co; 1810 Anson Co; 1820 Anson Co. |
