Name VariationWillie, called Willie throughout Sampson County records. The Duplin County tax list in 1834 used Wiley, and Wiley was used when he lived later in Georgia and Alabama
Birth*circa 1798Sampson County, North Carolina, USA4
Inheritedafter 1803Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, According to the newsletter, Wiley and Tombsin, his sister, inherited the land when their father John died. Tombsin died within ten years and the land went all to Wiley. This consisted of about 250 acres on the Duplin - Sampson County line. Wiley lived there with his mother for 29 years after John died.5
Event*21 January 1806Tombsin Balkcom; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, named as orphan children of John Balcom:

"Appointed Aaron Williams, William Stoakes & John Stallings a Committee to settle the accounts of Estate of John Balcom, dec'd with James Matthis the Adm'r & Reporte to Court." "Ordered John Bryan, Guardian to Orphans of John Balcom, dec'd, pay Hester Balcom $30 out of Interest of said Orphans money in his hands for each year she has maintained said two Orphan Children." This record indicates that Hester was not the mother of the two children.3

Event*12 May 1827James E. Balkcom; Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, appeared in Sampson County Court Minutes - "Appointed Matthew White for the road from the Duplin County line to Lisbon Bridge with the following hands to work: Rebecca Pridgen's hands, Moses Pridgen's hands, Wm Pridgen, Abram Blanton, Moses Blanton, Jonas Green, Thomas Coggin, James Evans Jr, Bryan Lee and hands, George Alderman, Alfred Taylor, Samuel Ward & hands, Willie Balcomb, James Balcomb and Nathan Johnson and hands."6

Willie Balcomb submits and is fined 6 pence and stands committed until fine and costs are paid. Nole Prosequi, as to Bowen."||Lewis Bowen and Wiley Balkcom were neighbors. Nole Prosequi - not prosecuted.6

Census*1830NC Duplin Co Census 1830; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, "Willy Bawkum", 100001 - 000101, one male under five, one male 30 - 40 (Wiley); one female 15 - 20 (possible relative or servant), and one female 30 - 40. Also listed are male slaves, two 10-24 and one 24-36. Adjacent households are Daniel Murphy, Polly Murphy, and several Matthews.

There's no certainty that this is Wiley Balkcom rather than the William Balkcom in the 1820 Duplin census, not found otherwise in 1830. If Wiley then he seemed to not have been married to Esther Mashburn by this time. The females in the household do not match Esther's age.8
Marriage*say 1831Esther M. Mashburn; date is estimated based on age of oldest son Josiah. No females of Esther's age in household in 1830 census.4

Households of James Balkcom and Daniel Murphy are nearby.12
Migration*1841Esther M. Mashburn; Dale County, Alabama, USA, the Old Settlers reference indicates they moved to Dale County in 1841, originally from NC. Children birth dates and locations indicate they more likely moved to Dale in around 1850.7

His father was named John Balkcom. I have often heard him speak of Alexander, Peyton, and Ichabud Balkcom. Whit Balkcom and Alex his brother lived in Henry Co, AL. Judson and Leg Balkcom lived in Florida. I could give you more but they are too numerous, it would take up too much time. There is one of Jeff Balkcom's sons in Walton Co FL, if you wish to write to him at Union, FL. I can't give you his initials but address him Budd Balkom. That's the way he spells his name. I have always spelled my name just like you do. Whit's family spells their name Balkum. Hoping to hear from you soon."19

Comment*some say this William could be the same person as Wiley Balkcom, but William's age in the 1820 census is not consistent with Wiley's birth from 1840-1860 census (William b1776-94, Wiley b1798). I believe William and Wiley are two different people, that Wiley is the son of John and William is a son of Hester Balkcom, from earlier marriages.
Birth*say 1792between 1776 and 1794 per 1820 census, between 1791 and 1800 per 1800 census, assuming William is one of the u10 males in the John Balkcom household in 1800.3
Tax List*1817Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, "William Baukom(sp?)"4
Cen-Head*1820NC Duplin Co Census 1820; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, "William Balkom", male age 26 to 45 (000010 20021). Females 2 u10, 2 26-45 (probably wife (either Nancy #2002 or Mariah #2003)), and the other sister or half-sister Mariah or Nancy, and 1 over 45 (probably mother Hester).

I say the female over 45 is Hester, but Hester in 1810 had 5 males under 25 in the household, 2 of which were under 10. William was the only male in the 1820 household. A complete neighbor comparison will have to be made between 1810 and 1820, but it appears that some William Balkom neighbors match those of Hester Balkcom in 1810 so this may be the original John and Hester home.5

Journal*"James Balkcom" appeared in the 1850 census in the household of Lemuel and Jemima Balkcom as an 8 year old male. In 1860, in the same household, "James Balkcum" was listed as age 19, listed last after all other children rather than first as his age would suggest. Possibly James is a brother of Lemuel rather than a son. If a son, the age gap of three years between James and the next oldest is not typical of this family that had a child every year beginning in 1845. For this compilation I'm still calling James a son of Lemuel.

Per the Baucom book, citing as a source p. 486 of the referenced book on NC Troops:

"... he resided in Sampson Co., NC; enlisted at Ft. Caswell 10 Nov 1862. Wounded in left arm and captured at Gettysburg 1-4 July 1863; left arm amputated. Confined to various Federal hospitals until received at City Point, Va. 27 Sept 1863 for exchange. Retired to invalid corps on 16 Apr 1864 by reason of disability."

Bennett Baucom1

Last Edited 13 Jun 2003

CommentCandidate for father of James E. Balkcom due to Johnston County location in 1810. But Bennett married in 1809 and apparently had a stable family. The Baucom Book does indicate a son before 1810 gone by 1830, unnamed. This would be the u10 male listed in the 1810 census, but who is unnamed in the will.
Birth*say 1785Wake County, North Carolina, USA, Census says 1765-84; Baucom Book estimates 17851,2

Birth*from 1754 to 1763Birthdate range is from census records and tax lists. James' appearance on the 1784 tax list would make him age 21 or older then. His appearance on the 1804 tax list would have made him age 21-50 then.1,3,4,5
