Mr. Enoch Galloway, was born July 27th, 1795, in Darlington District, S.C., where he resided till the day of his death, which occurred Nov. 25, 1861. He was married to his wife, Mrs. Sena Galloway, Dec. 24, 1817, with whom
he lived happily till 18th June last, at which time she was taken away by the hand of God. He was the father of nine children, all of whom he lived to bring up to mature age, and all of whom he left to mourn their irreparable loss. He was a kind father and husband, a good citizen, and an excellent neighbor.... He joined the M.E. Church some forty years ago, and continued a zealous and faithful member till the day of his departure from earth....He was afflicted with that distressing disease, hydrothorax, for several months, while sitting upright, was compelled to labor hard for the breath of life....He seemed conscious that his end was close at hand for several days previous to his dissolution, and often while suffering the most intense pain, praised God aloud, and said he should soon go to reap his reward and to meet his dear departed companion in heaven. He retained his rationality in the highest degree down to his last moments, and while sitting in his chair, at 3½ o’clock p.m., grasped me by the hand, and his ransomed soul immediately took its flight and went up to heaven in a perfect blaze of glory...... A.B. Galloway

Comment* Some web researchers have Absalom Galloway #1697 and Rachel Galloway #1699 as parents of Ezekiel; however, Ezekiel does not appear in will of Absalom. Ezekiel was born in around 1802 by very consistent census records, but Absalom apparently died by 1800

James Galloway1

M, #1707, b. before 1740

Last Edited   12 Jan 2005

Birth* before 1740 date guessed from Absalom birth2
Marriage* say 1754 Rebecca (?); date guessed, assuming that Rebecca is mother of Abraham who was born before 17552
Land* 1769 Lynches Creek, Cheraws District, South Carolina, USA, The reference states: "The Galloway Cemetery is located on land originally owned by James Galloway. Galloway first appeared as a land owner on Lynches Creek in January, 1769. He later obtained several grants of land on both sides of Lynches Creek and actively supported the American Revolution during the 1770's and 1780's."1
Military* 28 September 1775 American Revolution, South Carolina Militia Volunteer Corps, St. David's Parish, South Carolina, USA, Commissions were made out, signed, and dated for officers in Col Powell's Regiment of Militia, St. David's Parish. They included as an officer group Capt Thomas Hardyman, 2nd Lieut James Galloway, and Ensign Joseph Hardyman. This parish included the Lynches Creek area.

I think this commission was for father James #1707 rather than son James #1700, since the son could have been no older than 19 and was possibly younger.3,4
Land 16 November 1786 280 acres, south of Lynches Creek, Cheraws District, South Carolina, USA, land plat surveyed by Elias Dubose, Jr, for John Falour, could easily be instead for James' son ID#17005
Land* 31 October 1789 Absalom Galloway; 196 acres, north side of Lynches Creek, Darlington County, South Carolina, USA, It appears that father James Galloway provided for wife Rebecca by transferring land to son Absalom for her use, although I have no proof that the land transaction was from Absalom's father James.

Extract of Deed, James Galloway to Absalom Galloway: "...witnesseth that for and in consideration of twenty Pounds Sterling money of the said state to him in hand paid by the said Absalom Galloway at or before the signing sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt of which I the said James Galloway do acknowledge and have granted bargained sold and delivered and by these presents do bargain sell deliver and confirm unto the said Absolom Galloway in his actual possession now being by virtue of a bargain and sale to him for twenty pounds to him his heirs assigns forever a tract of land containing one hundred and ninety six acres part of two tracts and for the said Galloways [transcriber's note: there is no punctuation in Galloways] mother Rebecca Galloway is to have her life time in this said tract situate in Darlington County on the north side of Linches Creek granted to James Galloway bounded on William Barreks line together with all the houses, barnes, edifices, buildings, gardens, orchards, ferrys, waters, water courses, prophets, commodities, hereditament appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining to the said one hundred and ninety six acres of land herein mentioned the ditch to be the line between the two and all other lines agreeable to the three brothers with all the rights titles, true trust possession benefits property plains and demands whatsoever of him the said James Galloway to have and to hold the said one hundred and ninety six acres of land with all and singular the premises before mentioned unto the said Absalom Galloway his heirs and assigns forever ....

Nickname Elly3
Birth 1846 Alabama, USA, this alternate birth date comes from the listed age of 4 for Elly in the 1850 census. However, other evidence supports 1849 birth. The 1850 census lists presumed father William E. in the household as having married within the year. I think Elly's age in this census is really 4 months, not 4 years.

This assumes of course that Elly in this census is really James Eleazor, but there is pretty good evidence for that including estate papers of Eleazer Galloway.3
Birth* 1849 Henry County, Alabama, USA4
(Witness) Census 2 November 1850 Anna Parrish, AL Henry Co Census 1850; Southern District, HH #961, Henry County, Alabama, USA, Household was next to Eleazer Galloway family.
Complete household:
"Anna Parrish", age 70, born in SC;
"WE Galaway", male age 22, farmer, born in Alabama, married within the year, attended school within the year;
"Jane Galaway", age 23, born in Georgia;
"Elly Galaway", male age 4, born in Alabama.

Anna Parrish may be grandmother of Jane. There is no connection that I've found so far of William Galloway to the Parrish family. Anna at age 70 is probably not mother of Jane (age 23).5
Military* 1864 estate papers of grandfather Eleazer, dated 10 November, 1864, state that Eleazer is in the Army6
