Journal*Rosa (Rosanna) Brannon of Darlington County, South Carolina is the earliest identified Brannon ancestor of the Oklahoma Balkcom line. Lineage from Rosa to the Oklahoma Balkcoms is: Rosa's son Rosier, who lived lived most of his adult life in Henry County, Alabama; Rosier's daughter Rose Anne Brannon married Brantley Balkcom in 1865; Brantley's son John Ira Balkcom was the first of this line of Balkcoms to move to Oklahoma.
Birth*before 17751
CommentRosa's husband is not known. The candidates, based on adult male Brannons in this area of South Carolina at the time, are listed in the following.
Comment*Consider possibility that Rosa's maiden name was Rozier, or that it was her mother's maiden name. Look for Rozier/Rosier family names in SC and NC, and given names John, Judith, Martin, Elijah (Rosa's children). There is for example a Martin S. Rozier born Dec 1888 buried in Scots Cemetery south of Bethune, SC. Rose or Rosa was a frequently used given name with surname Rozier.
Comment*Andrew Brannon; Andrew Brannon unlikely candidate for husband of Rosa, although originally considered because Andrew was one of only three Brannon or Branham in Sumter, Kershaw, and Darlington Counties in 1800 fed census. He appears in Kershaw County census befoe and after Rosa, with family
Comment*Isaac Brannon; Isaac Brannon possible husband of Rosa (Isaac Brannon, Andrew Brannon, and Samuel Branham are the only male hoh in Sumter, Kershaw, or Darlington Counties in 1800 fed census).
Comment*Samuel Branham; possible husband of Rosanna, but Samuel had no adult females in household in 1800. 1800 Federal Census male hoh in Kershaw, Darlington, Sumter counties consist of only Samuel, Isaac, Andrew Brannon (Branham).
Comment*John Brannon; candidate for Rosanna husband because of age and confirmed presence in South Carolina in late 1700s, including in the Kershaw/Darlington region.
Comment*John Brannon; candidate for Rosanna husband because of death in 1803 in Kershaw. He had a sizable estate, administered by Sarah Brannon who could have been wife, mother, or sister.
Name Variation1808Rosanna2
Comment*1810Martin Brannon; Rosa not in 1810 fed census. However, her son Martin Brannon (Darlington 1820, 1810) is hoh in 1810 Darlington, with female possibly Rosa's age. However, there are no children in the household so seems unlikely to be Rosa, since Rosa's other children would still have been relatively young.3
Cen-Head*1820SC Darlington Co Census 1820; Darlington County, South Carolina, USA; "Rosa Brannin", female over 45, males 1 16-18 (possibly son Rosier), 1 19-25 (possibly son Elijah) (001100 00001).4
