Name VariationBalkcum
CommentNancy Balkcom; Nancy Balkcum and Mariah were daughters of Hester Balkcum according to Hester's will. They were born after the death of John Balkcum (d1803) who Hester had married probably in around 1799-1800. Nancy and Mariah's father is unknown but apparently Hester never remarried after John's death. She gave Nancy and Mariah the Balkcum surname. In fact Nancy gave her children the Balkcum surname as well and apparently never married. At least one of Nancy's children, Eliza b1829, was of mixed race, and was listed as "colored" on her death certificate. A photo of Eliza held by descendant Lisa Y. Henderson seems to confirm this. There is nothing in the records to indicate that any of Nancy's children other than Eliza (and possibly Margaret) were mixed-race.3
