FatherJames Galloway1 b. b 1740
MotherRebecca (?)1 b. b 1745
Birth*before 17551800 census identifies him as over 451,2,3
My ResearchNote*Eleazer Galloway; South Carolina, USA; Abraham is the best candidate for now in my view for father of Eleazer because he is shown to be in Camden and Cheraws Districts before 1790 and he is of the the Galloway family that had substantial land on Lynches Creek. One source alleges that Eleazer was from the Lynches Creek area. In the 1800 census Abraham had a male age 16-25 in the household, in the range for Eleazer although Eleazer's birth date is uncertain.
Military*say 1780American Revolution, South Carolina Militia, Camden District, South Carolina, USA; service dates not named, reference payment in 1787 for prior military service4
Land Grant*20 September 1784Big Cypress Creek, Cheraws District, South Carolina, USA; Land Transaction: "I have caused to be admeasured and laid out unto Abraham Galloway a tract of land containing four hundred acres situate in the District of Cheraws on the Big Cypress and hath such form and marks buttings and boundings as the above plat represents.

Certified for the 20th day September 1784
Elias DuBose D.S & Ephraim Mitchell Surveyor General"

The Big Cypress is in another source Big Cypress Creek.5
Land Grant10 November 1785Lynches Creek, Camden District, South Carolina, USA; Land transaction: "I have caused to be admeasured and laid out unto Abraham Galloway a tract of land containing three hundred acres situate in the District of Camden on the SE side of Lynches Creek and waters thereof and hath such form and marks buttings and boundings as the above plat represents.

Certified for the 10th day of November 1785
Elias DuBose D.S. & Ephraim Mitchell Surveyor General"

The reference has a transcription of the land plat. It shows vacant land on all sides.6
Misc*24 January 1787Camden District, South Carolina, USA; paid at Camden for prior unidentified South Carolina militia service in Revolutionary War7
Cen-Head*1800SC Sumter Co Census 1800; Sumter County, South Carolina, USA; "Abraham Galloway", male age 45 or older, with female age 26-44, males - 2 u10, 2 10-15, 1 16-25 (possibly Eleazer), females 1 u10, 1 10-15.3
Land*26 February 1803Darlington County, South Carolina, USA; research notes cite a land sale from Wm Balk to Rigdon Balk, referring to the land as part of the 400 acre Abraham Galloway land grant of April 3, 1786. Note that Absalom Galloway had a substantial land grant in the same year.8
Land*1 February 1808Thomas Galloway; Lynches Creek, Sumter District, South Carolina, USA; *appeared on a land plat of 800 acres for George Gideon and Alexander Gage, shown as owning adjacent land|| The land was at the confluence of Mill Creek, Lynches Creek, and Stump Branch. Thomas' land was on Stump Branch and appears to have abutted Lynches Creek. Land owned by Singleton was adjacent, then adjacent was Abraham's land. Other landowners named were Jacob Brown and John OGuire9
Cen-Head*1810SC Sumter Co Census 1810; Sumter County, South Carolina, USA; "Abrom Gallaway", age over 45, with female 45+, 2 males 16-25, 2 females u10, 2 females 16-25. Adjacent were Wm Galloway and Levy Gallaway families.10

Birth*before 1762Darlington County Region, South Carolina, USA; Birth was before 1774 per federal census, birth c1762 per IGI. Date before 1762 seems likely since he was a buyer at an estate sale in 1782 so probably an adult.4,1,2,5
My ResearchNote*Eleazer Galloway; South Carolina, USA; Absalom is unlikely as a candidate for Eleazer's father. Absalom's will names his current wife, refers to earlier marriage and children of the marriage, names children, but does not name Eleazer. Absalom died between 1793 (date of his will) and probably 1800. Eleazer was born c1787 so as a minor in 1793 should have been named in the will.
Misc*1782Camden District, South Carolina, USA; a buyer at the estate sale of Samuel Ratcliff6
Land Grant*3 April 1786Darlington County, South Carolina, USA; an Absalom land grant was referred to in a sale of land by Richard Ingram to Bolton Harris on Sept 15, 18277
Marriage*before 1789Spouse unknown, but referred to in Absalom's will8
Land*31 October 1789James Galloway; 196 acres, north side of Lynches Creek, Darlington County, South Carolina, USA; It appears that father James Galloway provided for wife Rebecca by transferring land to son Absalom for her use, although I have no proof that the land transaction was from Absalom's father James.

Extract of Deed, James Galloway to Absalom Galloway: "...witnesseth that for and in consideration of twenty Pounds Sterling money of the said state to him in hand paid by the said Absalom Galloway at or before the signing sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt of which I the said James Galloway do acknowledge and have granted bargained sold and delivered and by these presents do bargain sell deliver and confirm unto the said Absolom Galloway in his actual possession now being by virtue of a bargain and sale to him for twenty pounds to him his heirs assigns forever a tract of land containing one hundred and ninety six acres part of two tracts and for the said Galloways [transcriber's note: there is no punctuation in Galloways] mother Rebecca Galloway is to have her life time in this said tract situate in Darlington County on the north side of Linches Creek granted to James Galloway bounded on William Barreks line together with all the houses, barnes, edifices, buildings, gardens, orchards, ferrys, waters, water courses, prophets, commodities, hereditament appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining to the said one hundred and ninety six acres of land herein mentioned the ditch to be the line between the two and all other lines agreeable to the three brothers with all the rights titles, true trust possession benefits property plains and demands whatsoever of him the said James Galloway to have and to hold the said one hundred and ninety six acres of land with all and singular the premises before mentioned unto the said Absalom Galloway his heirs and assigns forever ....

Marriage*before 1790Rachel Marshall; Absalom's second marriage, supported by reference in Absalom will to children of first wife, and to current wife Rachel. Will*1 January 1793Darlington County, South Carolina, USA; The will of Absalom Galloway, witnessed by brother James, names wife Rachael, lending her "one third of the plantation whereon I now live as a dowry during her widowhood". It names her as outright recipient of many items, names her to receive "all the Hogs and Sheep in my mark for her Children begotten by me and my former Wife's Children till they become of Age." Birth*before 17561,2
Comment*Alexander Galloway; the Alexander who served in the South Carolina Militia during the American Revolution could have been either of these. Alexander #2138 of Fairfield County in 1800 seems a somewhat more likely choice given Fairfield County's closer location to the service locations listed. Alexander #1934 of York County also seemed to have a close link to Peter of York County, and I believe that the York Peter is not the one who served in the Revolution.

Land Grant*24 August 1770150 acres bounding southward on Lynches Creek, Craven County, South Carolina, USA; An indenture of sale of land in 1771 refers to "a plantation or tract of land containing 150 acres situate in Craven County granted by his Majesty to the above named Benjamin Galloway as appears in the original grant thereof bearing date the 24th day of August 1770";

A second reference (Memorials ...) registers a land title, apparently this same land, on 14 October 1771, describing it further "..containing 150 acres bounding southward on Lynches Creek on all other sides on vacant land originally granted the 24th day of Aug 1770 unto Benjamin Galloway at 2t Nt of 3/St for 4/pro money ..."

It may be that Benjamin may have registered the land in order to sell it, but I don't have the full transcript from the first source. I do have the entire transcript from the second source.1,2
Marriage*before 1771Sarah (?); Sarah was named as Benjamin's wife in a land deed1
Land*14 October 1771Sarah (?); 150 acres, near Lynches Creek, Craven County, South Carolina, USA; to John Piggott for Ten Shillings|| The transaction was made by two documents - one for the land sale and the second for wife Sarah to release any claim to the land as her dower. Witnesses were Nathaniel Piggott, Thomas Welch, and Charles Campbell. Transcriptions of these documents are attached. Land location is stated only generally, but it appears from the language that it abuts land of John Piggott. The documents name Benjamin Galloway's occupation as planter, his wife's name as Sarah, and describe the land as granted to him in 1770. There is no explanation for the extremely low selling price. Is it possible that this was a transfer within the family, say as if John Piggott were Sarah's father or brother?1
My ResearchNote*Eleazer Galloway; South Carolina, USA; Benjamin is a candidate for father of Eleazer. He owned land in the Lynches Creek area based on a land sale in 1771, but other than that he's an unknown

Journal*Leaty Parrish; Eleazer Galloway of the Darlington County region of South Carolina is the earliest known Galloway ancestor for the Balkcom line of western Oklahoma and southeast Alabama. Eleazer and his wife Leaty Parrish were early settlers in Henry County, Alabama and came to own substantial land there. Their link to the Balkcom line is through their daughter Anzilla Galloway who married Rosier Brannon of Henry County, formerly of Duplin County, North Carolina, in 1826. Rose Ann Brannon, a daughter of Rosier and Anzilla, had a son John Ira Balkcom who with his young family moved from Alabama to Texas in around 1901. After only a few years in Van Zandt County, Texas, they moved to Hollis in western Oklahoma.
CommentEleazer shows up infrequently as a given name and may provide clues about ancestors. Eleazer was an occasional surname in the Lexington District of SC in the early 1800s. Biblically, "The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible for the care of the sanctuary."3
My ResearchNote*Eleazer Galloway's parents are unknown. I believe Abraham Galloway is most likely his father. The following notes summarize some of the candidates.
My ResearchNote*Absalom Galloway; South Carolina, USA; Absalom is unlikely as a candidate for Eleazer's father. Absalom's will names his current wife, refers to earlier marriage and children of the marriage, names children, but does not name Eleazer. Absalom died between 1793 (date of his will) and probably 1800. Eleazer was born c1787 so as a minor in 1793 should have been named in the will.
My ResearchNote*Richard Galloway; South Carolina, USA; Richard is a candidate for father of Eleazer, appearing in the 1790 census with a male u16 in household, when Eleazer would have been under age 10.
My ResearchNote*Abraham Galloway; South Carolina, USA; Abraham is the best candidate for now in my view for father of Eleazer because he is shown to be in Camden and Cheraws Districts before 1790 and he is of the the Galloway family that had substantial land on Lynches Creek. One source alleges that Eleazer was from the Lynches Creek area. In the 1800 census Abraham had a male age 16-25 in the household, in the range for Eleazer although Eleazer's birth date is uncertain.
My ResearchNote*Benjamin Galloway; South Carolina, USA; Benjamin is a candidate for father of Eleazer. He owned land in the Lynches Creek area based on a land sale in 1771, but other than that he's an unknown
CommentMathew Galloway; Georgia, USA; One reference asserts that Mathew Galloway of Oglethorpe Co, GA is Eleazer's father. However, the Galloways in this area of Georgia are mostly from North Carolina and the connection to Eleazer seems tenuous, even though Eleazer was in central Georgia (Twiggs County) in 1813. He was back in SC in 1820.
Birth*circa 1787Cheraws District, South Carolina, USA; South Carolina birth confirmed by 1850 census. Birth in Darlington District asserted in referenced book by Mrs Scott. Hoyt Warren's book is more specific that Eleazer was from the Lynches Creek area, near where Lynches Creek and Little Lynches Creek merge. Birthdate uncertain, 1880 per 1850 census, 1887 per 1860, and 1890-1899 per 1830 census.4,5,6
Birthbetween 1790 and 18002
Marriage*say 1807Leaty Parrish7,8
Military*14 September 1813Georgia Militia, War of 1812, Twiggs County, Georgia, USA; from the "Payroll of the 1st detachment of militia ordered out on the frontier of Twiggs County in pursuance of orders from Brig General David Blackshear dated 7 August 1813 for the protection of the inhabitants residing on the Ocmulghee, and to build Fort Jackson." Private "Eleazer Galloway" appeared on a roster in Lieutenant Lovett B. Smith's Company, apparently as a "defaulter", no pay was listed. He doesn't appear in service records at the National Archives for volunteers who served in this war. Several South Carolina Galloways served in South Carolina and Georgia regiments for short periods of time. This particular detachment seems to have been drafted into service.9

My ResearchNoteThere are no tombstones in Henry or Dale Counties for Eleazer or Leaty Galloway. I think it likely they are in one of the areas of Old Center Methodist Church Cemetery that is missing markers. This cemetery was near where they lived and where many in the family are buried.
