He was a powerful man physically, but became overheated, and when the battle was over he lay down at a spring of cold water and took a big drink of it, and died from the effects two or three days thereafter. He was called 'Needham Murphy' ".2,3,4

Commentlikely the father, or possibly uncle (brother of father), of Mary (Polly) Murphy Balkcom. Daniel and Elizabeth Murphy were listed in the 1860 census next to James Balkcom and Mary Balkcom. They had no real estate listed, so were probably living on Balkcom's farm. 
Commentpossible mother is Priscilla Rouse, father John Murphy #1971. This is from one source citing a book.

I currently show, without proof, that Elizabeth (Wells) Murphy is the mother of Elizabeth Murphy of Dale County.

- I identify this family as the one that after 1830 moved to Lowndes County, Georgia and then to Dale County, Alabama; Daniel and Elizabeth ages match;
- If this is the same family that later had close ties to James E. Balkcom and wife Mary Polly Murphy, then it seems unlikely that they are parents of Mary Polly Murphy born 1814, who would have been under 10 in their household in 1820. There was no female under 10 counted.4

Note that age of this Daniel, if correct in the census, would make him born between 1791-1800, too young by 5 years for the Dale County Daniel. However, proximity to Wiley Balkcom makes it more likely that this is the Dale County Daniel. I think it's likely that the 1830 census age for Daniel is wrong.5

Only Wiley owned land according to the tax list. It was located near Ocopiloa Creek, also known as Okapilco Creek, about 4 miles East-SE of current day Quitman, Georgia. The land was then in Lowndes County, but later became part of Brooks County when it was formed in 1858 (see attached map for location of Wiley's land).6
