Murphy was 20 years old when enlisted. He was a fine soldier - none better. He fought through Jackson's Valley campaign, and in the battle of Cold Harbor, June 27, 1862, a very warm afternoon, he overdid himself. He was a powerful man physically, but became overheated, and when the battle was over he lay down at a spring of cold water and took a big drink of it, and died from the effects two or three days thereafter. Daniel Murphy1
M, #413, b. between 1782 and 1785
| Last Edited | 8 May 2010 |
| Comment | likely the father, or possibly uncle (brother of father), of Mary (Polly) Murphy Balkcom. Daniel and Elizabeth Murphy were listed in the 1860 census next to James Balkcom and Mary Balkcom. They had no real estate listed, so were probably living on Balkcom's farm. | |
| Comment | possible mother is Priscilla Rouse, father John Murphy #1971. This is from one source citing a book. | |
| Birth* | between 1782 and 1785 | North Carolina, USA1,2 |
| Marr Bond* | 24 December 1805 | Elizabeth Murphy; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, I treat this marriage bond as for the 1850 Dale County Alabama Elizabeth and Daniel. This is without solid evidence, but no other North Carolina marriage bonds have been uncovered in the right time frame that match. "Bride: Elizabeth Murphy Groom: Daniel Murphy Bond Date: 24 Dec 1805 County: Duplin Record #: 01 061 Bondsman: Shadrach Stal Witness: Wm Dickson Bond #: 000042109"1,3 |
| Comment | 1810 | On where Daniel and Elizabeth Murphy may have lived in 1810, after marriage in 1805: They weren't counted in their own household, so I assume they lived in another Murphy household. Daniel would have been age 25-27, Elizabeth age 18. Candidate households: Daniel Murphy 2 males age 26-44, 1 16-26, 1 female age 26-44 (so no candidate for Elizabeth) Elizabeth (Wells) Murphy, wife of William Murphy female age over 45, with females 2 u10, 2 16-25, 1 26-44; males 1 10-15, 1 16-25 (so this is an option, Elizabeth, wife of Daniel, may have been one of the 16-25 females, and Daniel may have been the 16-25 male) Timothy Murphy male age 26-44, with males 2 under 10; females 1 26-44, 2 under 10. Adjacent to Elizabeth Murphy household. (No candidates for either Daniel or Elizabeth) I currently show, without proof, that Elizabeth (Wells) Murphy is the mother of Elizabeth Murphy of Dale County. |
| Cen-Head* | 1820 | NC Duplin Co Census 1820; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, male age 26-44 (Daniel) with males 2 under 10 (probably Arnold and Marshall); females 2 18-26 (one probably wife Elizabeth), 2 10-16, and 1 16-18. Notes: - I identify this family as the one that after 1830 moved to Lowndes County, Georgia and then to Dale County, Alabama; Daniel and Elizabeth ages match; - If this is the same family that later had close ties to James E. Balkcom and wife Mary Polly Murphy, then it seems unlikely that they are parents of Mary Polly Murphy born 1814, who would have been under 10 in their household in 1820. There was no female under 10 counted.4 |
| Cen-Head* | 1830 | NC Duplin Co Census 1830; Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, male 30-39 with female 30-39, and males 1 5-9 (William?), 1 10-14 (Marshall?), and 1 15-19 (Arnold?); females 2 5-9, and 1 10-14. Lived adjacent to Wiley Balkcom, Polly Murphy, and several Matthews. Note that age of this Daniel, if correct in the census, would make him born between 1791-1800, too young by 5 years for the Dale County Daniel. However, proximity to Wiley Balkcom makes it more likely that this is the Dale County Daniel. I think it's likely that the 1830 census age for Daniel is wrong.5 |
| (Witness) Residence | 1840 | Wiley Balkcom; Lowndes County, Georgia, USA, Daniel and Elizabeth Murphy, James and Mary Balkcom, and Wiley and Esther Balkcom lived adjacent to each other in 1840 according to the census. Only Wiley owned land according to the tax list. It was located near Ocopiloa Creek, also known as Okapilco Creek, about 4 miles East-SE of current day Quitman, Georgia. The land was then in Lowndes County, but later became part of Brooks County when it was formed in 1858 (see attached map for location of Wiley's land).6 |
| Comment | 1840 | Lowndes County, Georgia, USA, this Daniel in 1840 is very likely the Daniel Murphy who moved to Dale County in around 1843. Daniel and Elizabeth ages match, and living in proximity to James E. Balkcom and Wiley Balkcom. |
| Cen-Head* | 1840 | GA Lowndes Co Census 1840; Lowndes County, Georgia, USA, male age 50-59, female 50-59 (prob Elizabeth), 1 male 5-9 (prob James D.), females 1 10-14 (prob Harriet), 1 15-19. Near household of James Balkcom7 |
| Migration* | 1844 | Elizabeth Murphy; Dale County, Alabama, USA8 |
| Event* | May 1849 | Lowndes County, Georgia, USA, "Daniel Murphy" appeared as owing a note of $37.50, dated January 2, 1840, in an inventory of the estate of E. J. Perkins9 |
| Cen-Agr* | 1850 | Dale County, Alabama, USA, 10 Acres of Improved Land, No Unimproved Land, $70 Cash Value of Farm, $10 Value of Farm Implements and Machinery, $80 Value of Livestock.10 |
| Census* | 17 January 1851 | AL Dale Co Census 1850; Southern Division, hh 902, Dale County, Alabama, USA, Adjacent households were Lewis Deal family (including Lucinda Deal, future wife of Joseph Balkcom), and a James Matthews, age 36 of NC. "Daniel Murphey", age 66, farmer, born in North Carolina, with $700 real estate assets; "Elizabeth Murphy", age 60, born in North Carolina; "Harriet Murphey', age 22, born in North Carolina, read/write no; "James D. Murphey", age 18, laborer, born in North Carolina; "John W M Murphey", age 2, born in Alabama; "Moses Kirklin", age 19, laborer.11 Witness: Elizabeth Murphy Witness: Harriet Murphy Witness: James Daniel Murphy Witness: John W Milton Murphy Witness: Moses Kirklin |
| Census* | 23 July 1860 | AL Dale Co Census 1860; Dale County, Alabama, USA, "Daniel Murphy",a 78 year old farmer, born in North Carolina, living with wife Elizabeth and a 12 year old boy - grandson?. They lived adjacent to James and Mary Balkcom and had no land of their own, so probably lived on the Balkcom property. Personal estate was valued at $75. "Elizabeth Murphy", age 68, born in North Carolina, not reading or writing; "Milton Murphy", male age 12, born in Alabama1 Witness: Elizabeth Murphy Witness: John W Milton Murphy |
