| Journal* | James E. Balkcom; James Balkcom and Mary (Polly) (maiden name probably Murphy) of Duplin County, North Carolina are the earliest known Balkcom ancestors of the Oklahoma Balkcom line. James' parents are unknown and will I think be difficult to prove. It's likely that he descends from the Alexander Balkcom line in Providence, Rhode Island in the 1600s. See the main page of this site www.pbalkcom.com/gwb for my reasoning and for a detailed biography of James. Indications are that his wife Mary is a Murphy from the Duplin County area of NC but proof has not been found. James moved to Lowndes County, Georgia, some time before 1838 and in a few years on to Dale County, Alabama where he bought considerable land and farmed. Their son Brantley had a son John Ira Balkcom who shortly after his own marriage moved his family to Oklahoma. | |
| Birth* | 1814 | North Carolina, USA, date is from her tombstone, and her birthplace is confirmed to be North Carolina based on the U.S. Census of 1900 listing parents of son Brantley.5,6 |
| Birth-Alt. | 1816 | North Carolina, USA, Alternate birthdate is based on census 1880, 1870 and 1860.7,8,9 |
| Married Name | Balkcom | |
| Marriage* | October 1835 | James E. Balkcom; Georgia, USA, marriage license for "James Becham and Mary Murphy" dated 13 October, 1835. It's likely that this Becham is James Balkcom but this is unconfirmed. This is about the time that James Balkcom came to Lowndes County, not far from the Thomas County line. It's also about the time he and Mary married. According to the census there were a number of Becham families in Georgia's Crawford and Stewart Counties. No Bechams are listed in Lowndes or Thomas in the census and none in Lowndes tax lists through 1844. However, a Hiram Becham is listed in an 1866 Thomas County marriage record. Cemetery citation is to support Murphy as last name of Mary (Polly).10,11,2 |

| (Witness) Census | 23 July 1860 | James E. Balkcom, AL Dale Co Census 1860; Newton Post Office, Dale County, Alabama, USA, "James Balkcom", age 53, farming, born in NC, real estate value was listed at $1500, personal estate at $700. The households of John W. Balkcom and wife Nancy age 19 (newly married) and Daniel Murphy (with wife Elizabeth and a 12 year old male Milton Murphy) were adjacent. Neither of the other families showed land holdings so it's likely that they had houses on the land of James Balkcom. Also listed on the same census page were Lewis Deal and wife Nancy J. Brannon Deal, with family. Nancy J. Brannon (person ID#1314) was the oldest daughter of Rosier Brannon and Anzilla Galloway, and sister to Rose Ann Brannon. Complete household: "James Balkcom" as above; "Mary Balkcom", age 44, born in NC, read/write no; "Selista J. Balkcom", female age 20, born Georgia, read/write yes; "Benjamin Balkcom", age 17, laborer, born Georgia, read/write yes; "Ivey Balkcom", male age 14, born Alabama, attending school, read/write yes; "Brantley Balkcom", male age 12 born Alabama, attending school, read/write yes; "Albert Balkcom", age 10, born Alabama, read/write yes; "Delilah Balkcom, female age 8, born Alabama, attending school, read/write yes; "Pricilla Balkcom", female age 6, born Alabama, attending school; "Neissa Balkcom", female age 4, born Alabama; "Ransom Balkcom", male age 3, born Alabama; "Joseph D. Balkcom", male age 19, farm laborer, born Alabama, read/write yes; "Cinda Balkcom", female age 18 born Alabama, read/write yes (Joseph's wife); "James A. Balkcom", age 23, school teacher, born Georgia, read/write yes (note: he was listed last in the large household even though the oldest. Birth dates and states support that he was the oldest child of James and Mary).12 |

The census taker apparently got months employed wrong, he listed almost everyone on this and immediately adjacent pages as unemployed 12 months out of year. On a later page he struck out a page full of 12 month entries, leaving no entries. The census taker appears to have got some of the birth places wrong, need to check another census to confirm.1 |
