Christopher S. Baldwin

JournalIntro* Elizabeth (?); Christopher Baldwin and wife Elizabeth of Stewart County, Georgia, are the earliest known Baldwin ancestors of the southwest Oklahoma Balkcoms and Baldwins. Christopher and his brothers and sister apparently lost their parents at an early age and first official records found place them in Georgia in 1830. Christopher and Elizabeth married before 1830, and Christopher died at the age of 43 in Stewart County. Their son Bryant F. Baldwin married Josephine Mathews, and their daughter Lucinda married John Ira Balkcom. John and Ida moved to Oklahoma in the early 1900s.
Birth* circa 1807 Georgia, USA, Mortality schedule and census of 1900 show this, but may be Tennessee instead.1,2,5
Birth-Alt. Tennessee, USA, Grimes in the reference states that Christopher Baldwin may have been originally from Tennessee. She references Terrill and Dixon, "he could have been an orphan who, along with his brothers and sister came from Tennessee and settled in Stewart County".6,7
Marriage* before 1829 Elizabeth (?)7
Cen-Head* 1830 GA Randolph Co Census 1830; Randolph County, Georgia, USA, "Christopher Baldwin", male age 20-30, with a female age 15-20 and a male 0-5. This may be his wife, who we believe to be Elizabeth, and son John Christopher. He is listed next to a William Baldwin age 20-30, possibly his brother? There is also an Augustus Baldwin listed in this census, male age 15-20, possibly another brother.8
Occupation* 1833 Moccasin Gap District, Stewart County, Georgia, USA, Justice of the Peace|| "Christopher Baldwin lived in the Moccasin Gap District and was a prominent citizen and was made Justice of the Peace in 1833. Also in 1833, he was appointed along with Jordan Hodges and William Porter to review a road from the Ft. Gaines road to Roanoke going by the homes of Wm Porter and Christopher Baldwin."3
Cen-Head 1840 GA Stewart Co Census 1840; Stewart County, Georgia, USA, "C. B. Bauldin", a male age 30 to 39, with:
Males, age 0-5 = 1
Males, age 5-10 = 2
Males, age 10-15 = 1
Females, age 25-30 = 1
He is listed on the same page as G. A. Bauldin, likely his brother Augustus. W.D. Bauldin is also listed in this county, probably a third brother9
Land* 1 October 1840 Sparta Land Office, Dale County, Alabama, USA, Referenced to the St Stephens Meridian survey:
"Christopher S Baldwin" - original grant clearly shows middle initial S, no other Christopher Baldwins show up in the region at this time.

T6N R23E:
Section 35 (80.09 acres) E1/2SE

The land today is on the eastern boundary of Ft. Rucker, close to Claybank Creek

Note that Kinchen Baldwin bought land just south of this section on the same day.
10
Note* 1 October 1840 Kinchen Baldwin; Sparta Land Office, Dale County, Alabama, USA, They bought land on the same day in adjacent sections
Executor* 6 June 1843 William D. Baldwin; Land Lot 130-13-2 Cherokee, Stewart County, Georgia, USA, "Christopher S. Baldwin" personally appeared as administrator of the estate of William D. Baldwin to claim the identified lot. William Boyton was appointed as attorney and it was signed by Christopher S. Baldwin before Freeman Walker and Isaac L. Streetman, J.P.11
Death* circa 1850 Georgia, USA, The Mortality schedule lists Christopher as dying in 1850 at the age of 43, birth in Georgia. Birthplace may not be right for Christopher but he's the only known Christopher of the right age in Stewart.12
Witness: Elizabeth (?)
Will* 6 March 1850 Court of Ordinary, Stewart County, Georgia, USA, see the attached for a transcript of the will of Christopher Baldwin, and an associated guardianship paper. The will refers to his wife and children but does not name them.13
