Obituary | June 2012 | David Edmond Bonia September 19, 1954 - June 20, 2012 Passed peacefully away, on June 20, 2012; David Edmond (Dave) Bonia; at the home of his beloved girlfriend and nurse, Nadine Barry of Grand Falls Windsor. He was 57 years of age. Dave was, in the words of one of his many friends, "a professional woodsman". He worked in various parts of this great country, from mining in Labrador City and Thompson, Manitoba to building boats in British Columbia. He also did mechanical, millwright and woodworking in Toronto. He "never liked it on the mainland" and was happiest back in Newfoundland, doing renovation and repair work as well as snow clearing and yard work for seniors. On a day like today, he would be saying "It's a great day to go fishing". Dave was predeceased by his mom, Marie (1970) and his older brother John (1994) as well as his grandparents and many extended family members. Left with fond memories are his dad, Jim and his stepmother, Monica of Grand Falls Windsor as well as his daughter, Melanie of Montreal, Quebec. Giving thanks for a lifetime of fun and laughter are his sister, Elizabeth (Libby) Cole of Falmouth, Nova Scotia and his brother Jim (girlfriend Karen Naugler) of Hantsport, Nova Scotia. He is the grandfather of Gabriel and Caleb; and the Uncle of Andrew Bonia; Marlene Skyes and James, Emily and April Bonia; as well as Joanna and Christian Cole. He will be remembered lovingly by his special Aunt Patsy Froude; best buddy Glen Wicks and a large circle of relatives and friends. At Dave's request, cremation has taken place and the interment will be at a later date with a private ceremony next to his mom in St Mary's, St Mary's Bay, NL. There will be a celebration of his life at Kelly's Pub at a later date. In his own words, spoken in his last few days "I love you all".1 |

Military | 11 January 1915 | In his Attestation Paper for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force for WW1, Dennis stated the following: Dennis Boudreau, born in Eastern Harbor, Cape Breton, Next-of-kin is wife Rose Boudreau of 1 Granville Street, Halifax. Date of birth is 02 September 1881 and he is an engineer and married. He states he is willing to be vaccinated. He states he has previously served in the Military in the 66th Reg. for 8 years and the 63rd Reg. for 6 years and he is willing to serve in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. The physical description is 34 years, 2 months; height 5 ft. 7 in; 38 inch chest girth when expanded, 2 inch range of expansion; medium complexion; grey eyes; light hair; Catholic; Scar on left wrist at base of thumb. Medical exam declared him fit to serve. Discharge Papers indicate that he is #489168 and he elisted in the 66th Battalion P.L.F on the 1st day of November 1915 at the York Redoubt, Halifax. He arrived overseas in England (E. Sandling) on the 31st of January 1916. He was a Private and served in France and Belgium with the 18th Battalion for 3 years and was discharged due to demobilization. He received the War Service Badge, Class A, #146471. He was 37 years and 7 months on discharge on April 6, 1919. He was listed as married to Rose Boudreau when he was discharged. On the 19th of February 1916, he was admitted to the Moore Barracks Hospital with myalgia. He stated he was married (not overseas) and complained of pain in both hips, small of the back, both knees and shortness of breath. Family History he gave was that he had 1 sister who died of TB. He had measles at age 12, pneumonia 5 years ago. He stayed there about 2 weeks. His wife, Rose, received $20 a month of his pay from February 1, 1916 through October, 1917. It appears that she changed her address in March, 1917 to 4 Cunard Court, Halifax. The pay was increased to $30 eventually and paid until April 1, 1919. On May 1, 1919, the Separation Pay of $30 was paid to Mrs. Moignard of 10 Cunard Court, Halifax. There is a note that is difficult to read that states "Mrs. Annie Murphy, guardian, 66 Prince Street, Halifax. (We now know this was his sister - was he divorced from Rose or did she die?) On August 2, 1945, Mrs. Louis Boudreau (widow) of 85 Lower Water Street, Halifax applied for a Pension, however, it was found that his death was not service related.12 |
