Biography | GIOVANNETTI, DR. JOSEPH LOUIS (1904- ). Physician. Born St. Jacques, Fortune Bay. Son of Louis John Giovannetti qv. Educated St. Bonaventure's College, St. John's; St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia; Dalhousie University, Hahfax, Nova Scotia. In 1931, after graduation from Dalhousie University, Giov¬ annetti joined the staff of the Glades Sanatorium in Saint John, New Brunswick as medical resident. From July to November 1933 he was resident physician at Dorchester, New Brunswick. He was appointed Medical Officer for Ferryland, Newfoundland in 1933 and was later ap¬ pointed to Calvert. He moved to Richibucto, New Brunswick in 1936, where he began a private medical practice. In 1940 he began work as staff physician with the Miramichi General Hospital in New Castle, New Brunswick but also maintained his practice. He remained with the hospital untU his retirement in 1979. Educated St. Bonaventure's College, St. John's; St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish; Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. From 1931 to 1933 Giovannetti maintained a private dental practice in St. John's. In 1934 he moved to Bell Island, where he practised dentistry for the next thirty years. In 1963 he was appointed Dental Surgeon at the Waterford Hospital in St. John's. He remained there until he retired in 1974. In 1973 Giovannetti was presented with an honorary membership in the Newfoundland Dental Association and in the mid-1970s was made an honorary alumnus of Dalhousie University. Biography | GIOVANNETTI, DR. LOUIS JOHN (1875-1963). Physician. Born Port Morien, Nova Scotia. Brother of Humbert Adrian Giovannetti qv., father of Dr. Humbert F., Dr. L.J. Giovanetti; Dr. Joseph L., Dr. Patricia M. and Reginald T. Giovannetti qqv. Educated Jersey City, New Jersey; St. Vincent's College, Beatty, Pennsylvania, United States; St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish; Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the summer of 1900, after graduation from Dalhousie University, Giovannetti travelled the west coast of Newfoundland and the coast of Labrador as medical examiner for the Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1901 he moved to St. Jacques, Fortune Bay and set up a medical practice with Dr. CT. Fitzgerald qv. In 1906 he was appointed Medical Officer, Justice of the Peace, Stipendiary Magistrate and Reheving Officer at Trepassey. In 1926 he left Trepassey for Placentia, where from 1927 to 1943 he served that area as Medical Officer. Giovannetti moved to Ferryland in 1944 and remained there as Medical Officer for the area until his retirement in 1950. He died on June 20, 1963 in St. John's. P.M. Biography | GIOVANNETTI, DR. PATRICIA MARY (1926-. ). Professor. Born Trepassey. Daughter of Louis John Giovannetti qv. Educated Placentia; Ferryland; St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia; St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Ontario; University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. After graduation from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, Giovannetti joined the staff of the St. John's General Hospital as a dietician in June 1950. She left the hospital in May 1951 and in June of that year began a year-long Dietetic Internship with St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. From September 1952 to August 1954 she worked as a public health nutritionist with the Department of Public Health in Halifax, Nova Scotia and in September 1954 she joined the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax as a clinical and teaching dietician. In September 1955 Giovannetti returned to Newfoundland to take up a position as Director of Dietetics at the St. John's Sanatorium. From January to August 1960 she worked as a residence counsellor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In September 1960 she was appointed field supervisor. Division of Community Leadership Development with the Department of Education in St. John's. From 1964 to 1972 she held several positions in the field of nutrition with various universities in the United States and Canada including the University of Minnesota, the University of Manitoba and the University of Saskatchewan. On July 1, 1972 she was appointed associate professor and chairman of the Department of Home Economics, Brescia College, at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. On July 1, 1981 she was appointed full professor of Home Economics. In 1982 she continued to hold both positions. Giovannetti received the General Foods Fellowship, at the University of Minnesota for 1964-1965 and the Ca nadian Dietetic Association Memorial Award for 1966-1967. Since the mid-1970s she has also received research grants from the Ontario Heart Foundation and from Ral¬ ston Purina. In 1982 she was a member of the Canadian Dietetic Association (Life Member), the Canadian Home Economics Association (Life Member), the Canadian Society for Nutritional Sciences, the American Dietetic Association, the American Home Economics Association, the American Institute of Nutrition and the Ontario Dietetic Association. Biography | GIOVANNETTI, REGINALD THOMAS (1924- ). Engineer. Born Trepassey. Son of Louis John Giovannetti qv. Edu¬ cated St. Bonaventure's College, St. John's; Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's; St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia; Nova Scotia Technical College, Halifax. After graduation from the Nova Scotia Technical College with a Bachelor of Engineering in 1952, Giovannetti began work as an industrial engineer with the Ford Company of Canada in Windsor, Ontario, and from 1954 to 1956 he worked with Canadian Industries Limited (C.I.L.) in Windsor, Ontario as a maintenance engineer. In 1956 he joined the Iron Ore Company of Canada, in Schefferville, Quebec as a construction site engineer. Giovannetti was appointed plant engineer with the Atlantic Coast Division of the Canadian Department of National Defence in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1958 and he remained there until 1967 when he was appointed industrial service manager and head of the Industrial Engineering Division with the H.M.S. Dockyard, Department of National Defence, Halifax. He continued to hold that position in 1982. In 1982 Giovannetti was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers. As well, he served as Vice-President of the Society of Canoe Championships, was a member of the Halifax Militia (Captain, 1946-1972), a member of the Dartmouth Centennial Committee, a member of the Canada Games Organizing Committee and a representative at three World Canoe Championships which were held in Munich, Mexico and Finland. (Greene) St. Croix passed away peacefully on May 22, 2010 in the presence of her family and friends. Born July 26, 1924 in Tilting, Fogo Island, Newfoundland, where she was raised and educated. Madeline gave extraordinary care throughout her career as a Certified Nursing Assistant, beginning at Childrens Hospital, Boston during the polio epidemic. She continued with loving devotion caring for the elderly and Alzheimers patients at the John Scott Nursing Home for over 25 years. Madelines love for her large family was her greatest joy. Madeline loved listening to Irish Music, knitting, and was famous for her homemade bread. She also enjoyed her summers in Maine with her children and grandchildren. Beloved wife of the late Alfred Ralph St. Croix. Devoted mother of Linda M. St. Croix-Toner and her husband Jim of Hanover, Francis J. St. Croix and his wife Jay of Halifax, Ralph M. St. Croix and his wife Betty of E. Bridgewater, Ann Marie Rossman and her husband Jerry of Braintree, Patricia L Critch and her husband Rich of Halifax and Kevin G. St. Croix and his wife Debbie of Weymouth. Sister of Harold Greene and his wife Anne of Weymouth and the late Isabel, Teresa, Herbert, Cecelia, Belle, Loretta, Frederick, Dorothy, Sr. Patrick Mary, Michael, Sr. Theresa Michael and William. Loving grandmother of 20 grandchildren and two great-grandsons. She was also grandmother of the late Jennifer St. Croix. Long time care taker and friend of Maureen Walsh of Dorchester and Marie MacDonald of E. Bridgewater. Funeral was from the McDonald Funeral Home, South Weymouth, at 809 Main St. (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hosp.) Wednesday, May 26 at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass to follow in Saint Francis Xavier Church, South Weymouth at 10 Oclock. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours was on Tuesday, May 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment Fairmount Cemetery, E. Weymouth.
