According to Madeline Sansoucy's letter (1981), he had 8 children by his 2nd wife. However, Matthew's letter states that his father was the oldest and had to take care of the other 10 until they started moving around Canada.

Sponsors of the marriage were Janet Barry and Alice Power. Priest was Father R. O'Donnell.

Frances Marshall said that it was always said that Richard's first family was adopted by Church of England adherents in the Burin area when his first wide died, and he had the temerity to marry a Catholic woman after that!; Principal=Richard George Marshall3

Note Although I cannot prove at this time, that Mary Hartstone, daughter of Patrick Hartstone and Ellen Bryan is my "Mary Hardstone - spelling listed in her marriage record to Richard George Marshall", I believe there is some evidence towards this.
1. The date of birth is about correct for a woman who had a child in 1892 at the age of 43.
2. It was said that Richard George's wife was Catholic.
3. In the 1921 Census of Salt Pond, living next to three families of Hartstones is a Moses Calford. This is the name given as a sponsor in Mary's baptism in 1848. The Moses listed in the Census would have been too young to have been the sponsor but I suspect it was his father. This also seems to lend weight to the idea that the Hartstone and Hardstone spellings are interchangable.2 
Name Variation Mary Hardstone; Hardstone is the spelling in her marriage record, however, Hartstone is the spelling in the baptismal record.
Various spellings of the name include: Hardstone (according to Seary's Newfoundland Family Names, this name and spelling originated in Devon, England). Other spellings found are Hartson, Hartstone, Heartston.1
