Joseph Breen replaced Vail as assistant and served in this role until Keeper Mooney retired in 1930. Breen was then promoted to head keeper and Reginald Mooney, son of John, was hired as assistant keeper.

Joseph Breen and Reginald Mooney lived in opposite sides of the duplex at Point La Haye for ten years. During this time, five or six Mooney children and a number of Breen children were born in the duplex. The two families steadily grew until they had twenty-five children between them.

Reginald and his wife Ann were married at the lighthouse, and Ann fondly remembered all the good times had there. Though isolated, the lighthouse seemed to be a community gathering place, as people from Gaskiers and Point La Haye would walk the beach to the station, where they would enjoy song, dance, recitation, and a homemade version of ‘spirits.’

It must have taken patience and sacrifice for two families to co-exist in such close proximity, especially with added company of a blaring foghorn. Ann recalls how after a while she didn't even hear the horn, but the same couldn't be said for the cries and whines of the yearly addition to the family.

Matt Mooney of St. John’s, NL (formerly of St. Mary’s) passed peacefully away in his 95th year at the Health Sciences Centre on May 3, 2017. He was predeceased by his son, Kenneth; parents, John and Elizabeth; siblings, Patrick, Reginald, Angela, Sister Reginald (Marie), Muriel, Frank, Dermot and Aiden. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 68 years, Josephine (nee Hayes); children, Karl (Annette), Keith (Annette), Janet (Herb) Gabereau, Ann (Barry) Bridger, Evelyn and Helen (Iain) Sinclair; grandchildren, Andrew, Chris, Kathryn, Paul, Erin, Angela, Dawn, Michelle, Joseph, Claire, Natalie, Danny, Emily, Jessica, Hilary and Laura and his great-grandchildren, Isabella, Campbell, Emma, Owen, Brooklyn, MacKenzie, Darius, Mukai and John. As well as a large circle of nieces and nephews. Matt was a man of great faith and was well respected by all who knew him, especially his friends and co-workers on the US bases and CN. The family would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for the excellent care he received at the Health Sciences Centre and at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home. Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass will take place at 11 am on Monday, May 8, 2017 from Corpus Christi Parish with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully accepted or donations in Matt’s memory may be made to a St. Vincent de Paul, Corpus Christi Parish."1

The Church of the Blessed Sacrament was the scene of a charming wedding yesterday at 3 p.m. when Miss Mary MORRIS, daughter of Judge and Mrs. MORRIS of St. John’s, Newfoundland, became the bride of F. Regis BURKE, also of Newfoundland. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Fr. STROCK in the presence of a number of friends and relatives.

The bride, who looked very charming, was gowned in champagne colored lace with hat to match, and carried a beautiful bouquet of white roses and maidenhair fern. She was attended by Miss Jeanne TRAPNELL, who wore a pretty blue silk retine. The Hon. W. J. ELLIS gave the bride away. Following the wedding there was a reception held at the home of Hon. Donald MORISON, K.C., and Mrs. MORISON at 2123 Beachwood Drive, Hollywood. With others attending there was about twenty-five friends from Newfoundland.

The bridegroom, who has lately come to Los Angeles, is a young man of exceptional talent and ability and occupies a position of responsibility in the Citizens Trust and Savings Bank of Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. Burke will reside in their new home, 2026c Hollywood Boulevard.

Among the guest from Newfoundland were F. C. BERTEAU, who is Auditor-General of Newfoundland. Mrs. BERTEAU, Miss Marian FRASER, Mrs. J. H. WATSON, Mr. and Miss TRAPNELL, Charles SIMMS, Hon. W. J ELLIS and Mr. and Mrs. GRIFFITHS.
