ObituaryOctober 2008 Glendive, Dawson County, Montana, United States; GLENDIVE, MONTANA: John M. Gibbons, 79, closed his eyes for his eternal rest on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive, Montana, surrounded by people who loved him. A Memorial Mass with military honors was held October 24, 2008 at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive. Interment will be in the Big Sandy Cemetery in Big Sandy, Montana.

John was born on November 14, 1928 in Plentywood, Montana to John J. and Inez (Benedict) Gibbons and was the only child. John's family moved to Big Sandy, Montana when John was a small child. He graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1949.

John entered the Army right out of High School on June 1, 1949 and served his time in Guam during the Korean conflict until he was honorably discharged in November, 1952. John came back to Big Sandy, Montana and went to work for the Great Northern Railroad until his position was eliminated. He then went to work for a trucking company out of Washington and worked for them doing deliveries on the High-line. John did a variety of handyman jobs for everyone in the Big Sandy area.

John loved to travel and was a great photographer. He also had a great appreciation for music. John was a volunteer fireman for the Big Sandy fire department and loved to tell stories about the different fires that happened in the area. Weather watching was his true love, he served as a weather watchman for 20 years for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. He was recognized and received awards for his documentation.

John loved to have his Big Sandy Mountaineer paper read to him and we would read it from the front cover to the back and we included the ads in the readings. He enjoyed the Big Sandy basketball team write ups and would recognize names of people he knew from the kids playing on the teams. John was a member of the Big Sandy Elks, Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign War. John may have left Big Sandy, but Big Sandy never left him.

John is preceded in death by his parents.
John is only survived by all of us who cared for him and loved him the last 11 years at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home.1

It is possible that the work of clearing the land and making a living proved to be difficult and so he returned to find a wife and maybe convince other male relatives to return with him. Reportedly, he returned in 1840 with his two sons, Lawrence and John. However, it states in John's obituary in 1905 that he came to the Newmarket area with his parents in 1840, implying that his mother came with them. It states that about 1843, after working in the Newmarket area for a few years that he went to live with his father on the 3rd Concession in Inisfil. Maybe his mother died between 1840 and 1843.; Principal=Thomas Gibbons1,5

Gravestone states: In Memory of John Gibbons who died March 25th, 1905, aged 79 years. Also his wife Mary McNally, died Dec. 5th, 1914 in her 93rd year. Bridget their dau. died March 10, 1922, aged 63 years.10,9
ObituaryMarch 1905 The Bradford Witness newspaper, Bradford, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada; "The sad news of the death of Mr. Jno. Gibbons of this place was received on Saturday, March 25th. Mr. Gibbons was born near Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland in the year of 1826 where he remained until 1840 at which time he came to Canada with his parents and worked as a farm hand for about three years on Young St., near Newmarket. On leaving Yonge, he went to the third concession of Inisfil where his father was located and remained with him until the year 1852 when he was united to Maria McNally of Castlebar, Co. Mayo, Ireland by Father O'Loughlin, in Newmarket, Ont. They settled upon the farm on which he died, where still remains the old log house as a relic of pioneer days. Those who remain to mourn the loss of a loved one is the wife, three sons and six daughters, three of whom live in the township, four in Moyie, B.C., and two at home. One brother and three sisters, also his stepmother survive him, his brother Thomas and sisters Mary and Mrs. Chambers of Warminister, Ont., and Mrs. B. Hickey of Uptergrove, and his stepmother of Warminister, whom we learn passed away on the day of the funeral. Besides those mentioned he leaves to mourn his loss thirty-one grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was associated wit the School Board here for about thirty years and gave up his task when our new school was completed. When we look at the charter of the I.O.G.T., which was organized here on October 16th, 1873, we find his name, and he continued his membership until a few years ago when he was compelled to remain at home on account of his many years. We also note that only two others of the charter members remain near here now. In politics he was a Liberal, yet took no active part. It was only within a few hours of his death that he gave up his work and was out doing some chores when he was taken with apoplexy. When removed to the house he regained consciousness for a time but passed away inside of fourteen hours from the time of the stroke.
The flowers sent were a wreath from his cousins in Hamilton, a spray from Mrs. Burton of Toronto, and harp and shamrock, the emblem of his native Isle, from Mr. J. A. Blain, Gilford.
The funeral was conducted from his late home on Tuesday to Bradford, thence to McGann's burial, attended by many friends, Rev. Father Whitney taking charge. The pall bearers were Thos. and Jno. Gibbons, Dolphe Thorpe and arnold Walker (grand children) and Lawrence Gibbons and John Hickey, (nephews). We extend to the family our sympathy in their hour of sadness."5

He was born on a farm outside of Waterloo, Ontario and moved to Toronto in the 1890s. There he found worked as a streetcar driver. He first piloted the horse drawn streetcars up Yonge Street and then served for fifteen years as a driver on the Belt Line. He became active in the driver's union, rising to a leadership position. He was elected to Toronto City Council, and served there for four years before being elected to the powerful Board of Control. On council he was the foremost representative of organized labour in city politics. His main campaign was for public ownership of utilities. He was central to the creation of the Toronto Transit Commission, bringing the previously privately owned streetcars under city control. He was a close friend of Adam Beck, and worked with him to bring publicly run electricity to the province. He was also a Catholic, and long the only Catholic member of the Board of Control. He was able to win significant support from Protestants over his career, a rare event in the sectarian politics of the staunchly Protestant city. He served on the Board of Control for ten years until 1929 when he resigned to be appointed a Toronto Hydro commissioner. He served on the commission until his death in 1946."9,10
