Birthcirca August 1877 Doonaroya, Addergoole Catholic Parish, County Mayo, Connacht Province, Ireland1
Baptism29 August 1877 Addergoole Catholic Parish, County Mayo, Connacht Province, Ireland; "Manus, Dominick Syron and Honor Merick. Dominick Syron & Mary Syron. Dunaroya"1
Military24 August 1897 Leeds, Yorkshire County, England; Manus signed up for "Short Service" (usually 7 years), this is information from his Attestation Papers on Aug. 24, 1897: #6793, Manus Syron from the Parish of Adreen, near the town of Mayo, in the County of Mayo, aged 19 years, 8 months, labourer. Joining the Grenadier Guards. He is 5 ft., 8 1/2 inches tall and weights 146 pounds. Minimum chest measurement is 35 and 1/2 inches, maximum is 38. His complexion is sallow, brown eyes, brown hair, and he has 2 scars - one on right side of belly and one on right side of jaw. He is Catholic and after the medical exam was declared fit and was given the rank of private in the 3rd Battalion.
On the 25th Februay, 1898, he was tried by DCM and convicted of "sleeping at his post" and was given 28 days of Hard Labour but 7 days were remitted by confirming officer. He returned to duty on March 18. On May 12, 1898, he was discharged from Service as "medically unfirt for further service" and was given 230 days of service towards a pension. His character in the service was listed as good. The disability is listed as flat foot - "this man was noticed on his arrival at the depot to have a tendancy to flat foot. This has now increased and he cannot march properly. He was not brought up as a recruit under 3 months as he develped scarlet fever and was on sick furlow for his recovery. (hospitalized from Nov. 5, 1897 until Jan. 22, 1898). The disease is not the result of service, or climate, and has not been aggravated by vice, intemperance or misconduct. It states that the disability is permanent and will not interfere with his earning a livelihood.
Next of kin is listed as his father, Dominick Syron of Doonaroya, Boughadoon Post Office, near Crossmolina.3
Immigration26 March 1901 Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States; The Ship's Manifest for the S.S. Etruria, states that it left Liverpool, England on March 16, 1901 and arrived in New York Harbor on March 26, 1901. On board listing:
Passenger #19 on Page 11, Ticket #3516, Syron, Manus, age 23, male, single, steelworker, can read and write, Irish from Mayo, has never been in USA before, final destination is Scranton. He paid for his own ticket and has $30 with him. He is going to see his cousin J. Syron of 513 Markman Ave. in Scranton. He was born in Ireland. Travelling with him on the same ticket # is -
Syron, John, 24, farmer, Irish from Mayo, going to see his brother, Martin, at 530 N. Main Street in Scranton, he bought his own ticket and has $6 with him.
My thoughts: I believe that Manus is the son of Dominick Syron and Honor Merrick who was baptized in Aug. 1877 and so this would fit his age given on the manifest. Also, he has a first cousin, named Joseph Syron, son of Thomas Syron and Celia Gallagher, who is living in Scranton at the time. Joseph is the only "J. Syron" that I can find in the 1900 Census in Scranton.
The other person travelling, John Syron, who says he is the brother of Martin, is also a son of Thomas Syron and Celia Gallagher, although the age is a little off. That would mean that Manus and John who are travelling together are first cousins.; Principal=John Syron4
Naturalization1902 Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States; The newspaper states: "Manus Syron, a native of Ireland, was admitted to citizenship."5

Marriage25 June 1928 Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States; Newspaper Article: "One of June's prettiest weddings was solemnized in St. Patrick's church, West Scranton, when Miss Marguerite Syron, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Syron of 514 Sumner Avenue, became the bride of Joseph Donnegan, of Luzerne Street. The ceremony and the nuptial mass, which followed were performed by Rev. William P. McAndrew, of Towanda, Pa., a cousin of the bride. During the ceremony and the mass several selections were sung by Joseph Kane. The bride was charming in a French frock, of flesh pussy-willow taffeta, fashioned with tight fitting bodice, and bouffant effect skirt, with the irregular line. Her hat was a picture hat of orchid lace straw, with satin streamers. She carried a shower bouquet of butterfly roses and valley lilies, and wore a strand of pearls, a gift of the bridegroom. Her maid, Miss Anna Syron, a sister, wore a frock of French blue shadow taffeta, fashioned with basque bodice and ruffled skirt, caught at right side with bouquet of French flowers with streamers of rose satin ribbon. Her hat was flesh lace straw with scarf of flesh tulle, hanging to the hemline of her dress. She carried an arm bouquet of ophelia roses and baby breath. Mr. Donnegan was attended by his brother, Thomas Donnegan. After the ceremony, a reception was given for the immediate relatives at the bride's at the home of the bride's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Donnegan have left for a motor trip through the New England states and will be home at 327 Sumner Ave. after July 10."
