The McLaughlin Families of Valcartier
Researched by Patricia Balkcom & Ellen McLaughlin Harford, May 2015
Valcartier church and census records indicate there were two main McLaughlin families in Valcartier. Due to discrepancies in the records, it has been difficult to sort out the two families.
The two main families were:
1. Hugh McLaughlin and Ellen Connolly and their descendants. This family emigrated from County Leitrim, Ireland in 1834 or 1835.
2. Descendants of Edward McLaughlin and Ann Martin. The earliest record I have found in Valcartier for this family is the marriage of Catherine McLaughlin, daughter of Edward McLaughlin and Ann Martin, to Jean-Baptiste Bedard on January 13, 1847. It thus appears that this family came to the Valcartier area in the mid-1840s, maybe as a result of the famine. Records seem to indicate that some of the children of Edward and Ann came at that time and that Edward and Ann remained in County Sligo, Ireland. Ann died there about 1848 and Edward came to Canada later. He is living in New Brunswick by the 1861 Census. Unfortunately, the 1851 Census for this area was destroyed, so it is difficult to pinpoint when he arrived.
As I said, due to incomplete or erroneous records, the following questions are posed.
1. Who was the Edward McLaughlin who was married to Bridget McDonald and who was buried in Valcartier in 1899?
2. There are two women named Winnifred McLaughlin living in Valcartier – they are very close in age. One was possibly born in 1825 and one in 1826. One seems to definitely be the daughter of Hugh McLaughlin and Ellen Connolly. The other one is the mystery one. Her marriage record states she is the daughter of Mathew and Mary McLaughlin, however, the marriage record of Sarah McLaughlin (daughter of Edward McLaughlin and Ann Martin) appears to state that the witness to the wedding is “Winny, her sister”. So the question is – Did the marriage record of Winnifred McLaughlin and John Bowles mistakenly state that her parents were Mathew and Mary?
3. Who is Mathew McLaughlin, who is living in New Brunswick, with other children of Edward McLaughlin and Ann Martin?
4. Who is “Kate”, the first wife of Patrick Cassin (son of Edward Cassin and Bridget O’Reilly) and did she have any connection to the McLaughlin family?
I have tried to summarize my research on the accompanying spreadsheet. Questions still remain and I am hopeful that the Irish Church records which are to be released online in July will help to answer some of them. Also, the question about Kate, hopefully will be cleared up by Wisconsin church records.

|Ireland||Bridget, daughter of Edward, married John Bowles (son of John Bowles & Winnifred McLaughlin)|
|Could Edward be a son of Hugh & Ellen? He might have been the first-born and maybe they were living in County Tyrone and then moved to County Leitrim - the counties are both in the north of Ireland. However, if Edward was the son of Hugh McLaughlin & Ellen McLaughlin, then both his children (Hugh & Ellen) married their first cousins and their is no mention of consanguinity in the marriage records..|
|Edward McLaughlin||Unknown||c1786 in Ahmalish, Co. Sligo, Ire.||To Ann Martin||30 December 1879 - Petersville, NB||In 1871, in Petersville, New Brunswick, Edward is living with his daughter, Sarah's family. He is listed as 90 years old.|
|Place of birth on gravestone||?||St. Ignatius Cemetery, Petersville,||Edward's Wife, Ann Martin, died about 1849 in Ireland. It appears he came to New Brunswick after that. The 1851 Petersville census no longer exists but he appears in the 1861 Census.|
|Mary McLaughlin||Edward McLaughin & Ann Martin||c1825 (based on age in burial record)||To Jean-Baptiste Bedard||31 January 1907 - Valcartier, Que.||named Children Edward & Ann; also, Sarah, Catherine (possibly after two of her sisters)|

|(from Sarah's marr. Record)||based on age in 1871 Census||11 Feb. 1850||St. Ignatius Cemetery, Petersville,||Sarah & Andrew moved to New Brunswick shortly after their marriage.|
|Co. Sligo, Ire. ?||Valcartier||New Brunswick||She named a son, Edward. Also daughters, Catherine, Mary, Rosie, and Sarah (after her 4 sisters)|
|Rose Ann McLaughlin||Edward McLaughin & Ann Martin||c1830 (based on age on Death Schedule)||To James Perkinson||04 March 1891; Petersville, NB|
|1861 Census states Edward is her father and living with her and her husband||Co. Sligo, Ire. ?||c1854, New Brunswick||probably St. Ignatius Cemetery, Petersville|
|Patrick McLaughlin||Edward McLaughin & Ann Martin||January, 1833 (date in the 1900 Wisconsin Census)||To Mary Cassin||13 March 1912, Lebanon, Waupaca,Wisconsin||In the 1910 Census it states that he emigrated to the "U.S." in 1845. Could this be the date he came from Ireland to Canada with his siblings? We know that his sister married in Quebec in 1847. It's possible that the siblings came to Canada without their parents and then their father came after their mother died. Naturalization papers state he went to Milwaukee, WI in September of 1862. He must have returned to Valcartier to marry in 1867. It appears their first child is born in Wisconsin in March, 1870.|
|(from Patrickl's marr. Record)||Co. Sligo, Ire. ?||17 Sept 1867||St. Patrick Cemetery, Lebanon, WI||He named two of his children Edward and Ann.|
|Winnifred McLaughlin||Matthew & Mary ?||c1826 (based on age in burial record)||To James Thomas Loughren||02 May 1914 - Valcartier, Que.||Winnifred's daughter, Catherine, married George Hogan in 1879. He was fromPetersville, New Brunswick, the same place that Edward McLaughlin & several of his children were living.|
|(from Winnifred's marr. Record)||Ireland||20 Sep. 1853||St. Gabriel Cemetery, Valcartier||Could this "Winny" be sister to Sarah????? - the one mentioned in Sarah's marriage record?|
|Was this a mistake by the priest?||Valcartier||Note - Winnifred named two of her children Ann & Edward (her parents?), also named children, Sarah, Catherine, Rose Ann & Patrick (the names of four of Edward's children). NO Matthew or Mary!!! I think this is strong evidence that Winnifred is the daughter of Edward McLaughlin and Ann Martin.|
|Were the parents really Edward & Ann Martin?|
|Matthew McLaughllin||Could this be another son of Edward McLaughlin & Ann Martin?||c1819 (based on age in burial record)||To widow Catherine Murphy||02 April 1896 - Enniskillen, New Brunswick||In the 1861 Census, Mathew is living very close to Catherine McLaughlin O'Neill (daughter of Edward McLaughlin). In the 1881 Census, Mathew is living with Sarah McLaughlin and her husband, Andrew Blakely.|
|Ireland||10 July 1862 (widowed by 1881)||This Mathew would be too young to be the father of Winnifred, could it be her brother and a child of Edward McLaughlin and Ann Martin? Or is he a cousin? If so, does this indicate that there was indeed a Mathew McLaughlin who could have been the father of Winnifred?|
|Carleton, New Brunswick|
|Patrick Cassin||Edward Cassin & Bridget O'Reilly. Patrick is brother to Mary Cassin who married Patrick McLaughlin (son of Edward McLaughlin and Ann Martin).||10 June 1848 (from baptismal record)||1. Kate (1870s) 2. Mary Ann Hornby (23 October 1900)||In St. Patrick's Cemetery in Lebanon, Waupaca County, WI, a "Kate, wife of Patrick Cassin, aged 35" is listed in the family plot of Michael Cassin and Jessie Corrigan. In the same cemetery, in the family plot of Patrick McLaughlin and Ann Cassin, there is mentioned "Kate" - with the same death date as the Kate in the Cassin plot. My first theory was that since Kate was listed in both the Cassin and the McLaughlin plots that she probably was both a Cassin (as wife of Patrick) and a McLaughlin (as daughter of Edward). However, I have now discovered a Catherine McLaughlin, daughter of Edward, in New Brunswick, so it seems very unlikely that he had daughters by the names of Kate and Catherine. So, who is Kate, and why is she on both gravestones? We are working at trying to find the church burial records for her and possibly the marriage record. The date listed on the stone is 14 April 18? - some sources say it says 1870 but this seems too early as Patrick did not go to the USA until sometime in the early 1870s. It's possible that Kate died 14 April 1877.|
