Last Will of Edward Cassin

On this day the twenty first of June in the year one thousand eight hundred and ninety five, before us P.E. Émile Bélanger and Cyprien Labrèque the undersigned Notaries Public residing and practicing at Quebec, personally came and appeared Edward Cassin, Farmer, of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, County of Quebec, who requested us the said Notaries to write down and receive his last will and testament which he has declared in manner and form following, that is to say:

 

1st I desire that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid by my Executrix hereinafter named as soon as possible after my death.

 

2nd I give, devise and bequeath to my wife Dame Mary Jane Brennan the whole of my property, real and personal, moveable and immovable, of which I may die possessed, hereby constituting my said wife my universal legatee and devisee.

 

I appoint my said wife Executrix of this my last will and testament and I revoke all wills and codicils I may have heretofore made.

 

The present will was thus declared by the said Testator to us the said Notaries, and by P.E. Émile Bélanger, one of the said Notaries, the other being present, read to the said Testator, who declared to well and truly understand the same, and to persist therein.

 

Done and passed at the City of Quebec on the day, month and year first herein above written under the number two thousand five hundred and thirty three of the minutes of said Notary Bélanger.

 

And the said Testator having declared not to know how to write or sign his name has made a mark of a cross in the presence of the said Notaries who have signed in the presence of the Testator and in the presence of one and other after due reading hereof and the fulfillment of all the formalities required by law for the validity of wills & testaments.

 

Seven words erased are null.

Notes by Patricia Balkcom:   Edward died 5 years later in 1901 at the age of 49.  He and his wife, Mary Jane Brennan, did not have any children.
