Illnessbetween 1952 and 1954 St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland, Canada; From a letter that Bren wrote to me in 1995: "Growing up was pretty much standard for Newfoundland until I reached the age of eleven. At 11 years, I became very ill and after many months it was discovered that I had tuberculosis. TB, was a that time a killer disease and once you contacted it your were more or less put away to die. I was finally hospitalized and spent two years battling the disease. Since "only the good die young, " I was spared. During my two year stay in the hospital, I saw my father twice and my mother only once. The main reason was their lack of money. They had 10 other children at home and with employment almost nil they just could not afford the luxury of a taxi to take them over 100 miles away to see me. Anyhow I survived, none the worse for the experience.
After my bout with TB, I returned home and picked up my schooling. Upon completion of high school in 1959, I attended a teacher's training college in St. John's for three months - that was all that was needed here in Nfld. to become a qualified teacher. For the next four years I taught school and for the last two of those I taught all subjects in High School and was School Principal. It was a simple 5-room school with a pot bellied wood stove for heating and outdoor toilets. What a challenge for a 17 year old and what a difference from today. You see we were still only 10 years old as a province of Canada then and we were all very poor people. When I look back at those days I feel almost as much of a pioneer as great-grandfather Ben." (Bren was at St. Stephen's School in Gaskiers from 1959-63 where he was a teacher and principal.)5
AnecdoteOctober 1995 To give you a flavor or Bren's wit, this is an excerpt from a letter he wrote to me: "It's a beautiful, sunny Sunday morning here. I got up early and went to Mass at 9am. Now that I have the house to myself, I'm kind of taking it easy. I have a nice, thick juicy caribou steak frying on the pan, a nice, cold, cold Coor's lite beer on the table next to my cigarettes and ashtray. Sorry to say I'm one of those smokers. I've been hypnotized three times, had laser treatment twice, spent $80 for the Life Sign machine, and another $50 on a ten week "stop smoking class" and am still at it. How's that for being a pig-headed, stubborn S.O.B,!"5
