Aug. 27, 1922 - March 20, 2009
It is with sadness that the family of John Joseph St. Croix announces his passing at Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre, Port aux Basques, NL, on March 20, 2009. Joe was born at Coal Brook, NL, on Aug. 27, 1922, the eldest son of Stanislaus and Annie St. Croix. He raised his family and spent his whole life in Coal Brook.
Joe was a veteran of WWII, having served in the Newfoundland Regiment (Artillery), service number 1158179, during the closing months of the war. He returned home in August of 1945, and on Dec. 26, 1945 married his waiting sweetheart Margaret MacArthur at the Roman Catholic Church in South Branch. He worked in the mines at Coal Brook as well as on the "road gang" in the 1940s and early 1950s; in the pulpwood cutting industry; on the building of the TCH in the 1950s; the replacement of the old wooden bridge at Coal Brook; the construction of the Chicnic Lodge; the Railway overpass at North Branch and the breakwater at Port aux Basques in the 1960s. He was an avid fly fisherman and hunter and was well acquainted with the local countryside.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret (MacArthur); sons, Ron (Cynthia), Jack (Jackie), Alex (Kit), Neil (Shyanne), Ben (Joanne), Derin (Deanna); daughters, Shirley (Roger Caissie), Patricia (Guy Locke), Imelda (Joe Weiler), Bernette (Shawn AuCoin) and Rhonda (Anthony Winsor); brothers, Fintan (Mary O'Quinn) and Garreth (Ita Mclsaac); sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth (Jack Forward); and by 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
