Anecdote | The name St. Croix means Holy Cross. The story that I heard from Gertie St. Croix was that our ancestors carried the Cross in the Crusades. Supposedly, three brothers came to Newfoundland to fight in the French and English war in the 1700's. At that time the capitol of Newfoundland was in a place called Placentia or Placence as the French called it. The war was fought in St. John's which was held by the English. The French lost the battle and were driven out. These three St.Croix brothers did not want to return to France and so stayed and ran to settlements along the coast. One brother went to what is called the French Shore but we don't know what became of him. The other two brothers settled in St. Mary"s Bay and married into the Irish.2 | |
