Occupation | circa 1928 | Point La Haye, Placentia & St. Mary's District, Newfoundland, Canada; Point La Haye Lighthouse - Patrick Vail served as the first assistant under John Mooney, and during this time a duplex was built to house the two keepers and their families. Joseph Breen replaced Vail as assistant and served in this role until Keeper Mooney retired in 1930. Breen was then promoted to head keeper and Reginald Mooney, son of John, was hired as assistant keeper. Joseph Breen and Reginald Mooney lived in opposite sides of the duplex at Point La Haye for ten years. During this time, five or six Mooney children and a number of Breen children were born in the duplex. The two families steadily grew until they had twenty-five children between them. Reginald and his wife Ann were married at the lighthouse, and Ann fondly remembered all the good times had there. Though isolated, the lighthouse seemed to be a community gathering place, as people from Gaskiers and Point La Haye would walk the beach to the station, where they would enjoy song, dance, recitation, and a homemade version of ‘spirits.’ It must have taken patience and sacrifice for two families to co-exist in such close proximity, especially with added company of a blaring foghorn. Ann recalls how after a while she didn't even hear the horn, but the same couldn't be said for the cries and whines of the yearly addition to the family. Keepers: John Mooney (at least 1886 - 1889), Patrick Mooney (1890 - 1907), John Mooney (1908 - 1930), Joseph Breen (1930 - 1941), William White (1941 - 1968), Michael Cahill, Frank Mullett.7 |

Obituary | 22 May 2017 | Bowmanville, Durham County, Ontario, Canada; It is with deepest sadness, the family of “Vinnie” Vincent Thomas Gordon Vanstone announce his passing on May 14, 2017. Vinnie is survived by his loving wife Shirley, his children Shelley Allen, Timmie (Diane) Vanstone, Penny Vanstone, Todd (Darlene) Vanstone and Tammy (Dwayne) Martell. Vinnie is also survived by his brother and sisters, Mabel (John) Trimble, Marion Vanstone, Curt Vanstone, Winnie Vanstone and Debbie (Brian) Vanstone. Vinnie was predeceased by his Mom and Dad Charlie and Flo Vanstone and Sister in law Carrol Vanstone. Vinnie is also survived by multitudes of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; too many to list. Vinnie was an amazing fishing partner to all. Goaltender Extraordinaire; Old Timer Hockey will never be the same without him. Vinnie went through so many eras of goaltending equipment – from no mask to the Patvin Special “The Man behind the Mask”. Vinnie was an amazing father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Vinnie was loved by everyone and so important to everyone who knew him. Vinnie loved hockey, golfing, cars, darts, baseball, crib, and fishing. All things manly. In fishing, Vinnie was very stubborn about the metric system, which got Vinnie into trouble quite a few times. Anyone who had the pleasure to know Vinnie knew he was a man of many words. Vinnie loved and cherished all his family and friends and will be forever sadly missed by all. We love you Vinnie, RIP. A private family interment will be held. A Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday May 23, 2017 at Shirley’s home – 121 Cowanville Rd, Newcastle, Ontario from 3:30 – 7:30.1 |
