Birthsay 1795 Fethard Civil Parish, County Tipperary, Munster Province, Ireland; (In the Catholic Parish records for County Tipperary, there is a baptism of a Mauritius Walsh, baptized on 29 January 1790 of Jacob Walsh and Ellen Cantwell. - Carrick-on-Suir parish - it appears this was the closest parish to Fethard that had records in the late 1790s) - it is not known if this is the Martin Walsh who went to Newfoundland.)2
ImmigrationMarch 1826 County Waterford, Munster Province, Ireland; Dr. John Mannion in his article explains how men were recruited from Ireland to work in Placentia: "This pool of labour was augmented from Waterford in the spring. Between March 2 and 14, 1826, Sweetmans hired "captains" and youngsters at L8 and L6 (pounds), respectively, for the season. Each servant signed a standard contract designed for the trade: 'I have this day hired with R.F. Sweetman to proceed on board the brig concord, James Wagg, master, and there to serve R. F. Sweetman, his agents or assigns, in the capacity of an able captain or together employment for the good of the voyage, until November 1. The balance of wages to be paid in cash.' A shallop captain was below a foreshipman, but the substantially lower contract wages for both captains and youngsters at Waterford probably reflected the costs of passage and supplies. The captains and even some of the youngsters had been to Newfoundland before; one captain had spent three summers there and his wages were raised to l10. Martin Walsh of Fethard, on the other hand, agreed to work as a youngster 'if unable to function as a captain.' Each servant had a guarantor from his home place who pledged to reimburse Sweetmans should the servant abscond." Note: Mannion states that the term 'youngster' meant an inexperienced man or boy.2
Religion1826 Placentia, Placentia & St. Mary's District, Newfoundland, Canada; Martin Walsh is listed as a donor to the Catholic Church under Rev. Andrew Cleary in 1826. He gave "4" - could be currency of Pounds.1
Residence1826 Placentia, Newfoundland, Canada1
