Married Name Peddle1
(Witness) Death20 November 1904 St. Mary's Bay, Placentia & St. Mary's District, Newfoundland, Canada; Although there is no proof that this is the James Peddle that married Elizabeth Butt, it appears to be the right person as there are no other James Peddles listed in the death registrations between 1890 and 1911.
The death registration states on line #34: James Peddle, died Nov. 20, 1904 in St. Mary's, cause of death was Decline, attendants were Dr. Hogan and Rev. Driscoll (Catholic), aged 76, born and buried in St. Mary's.; Principal=James Peddle1,3

1st. I give and bequeath to my son James Butt my bed, bedding and bedstead, also ground to build a house on should he require it.
2nd. I give and bequeath to my son Andrew Peddle my house, cellar, and stable and all that is in the house, but my daughter Elizabeth Peddle is to have a home in the house while she remains single.

St. Mary's, Sept. 19, 1911
Singed by Elizabeth Peddle in our presence for her last will, having been first read over and explained to her.
Signed by the two witnesses.1
Death17 October 1911 Newfoundland, Canada; Death Registration states: Elizabeth Peddle died in St. Mary's on October 17, 1911 of enteritis at the age of 60 years. She was attended by Dr. Hogan and Rev. S. Driscoll, she was Catholic and buried in St. Mary's. A second column also named "Place of Death" states Carbonear, however, this column may actually have been for a place of birth.1,2
Probate17 November 1914 St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland, Canada; Several legal papers are included in the probate and estate file, including the Will. These are the important points in this folder:
- No executor was named in the Will, so on 17th November 1914, Lilian Bonia was named the Administrator of the Will by the Supreme Court of Newfoundland.
- It is stated that Elizabeth Peddle died on the 12th of October, 1911 (note that death registration states the 17th)
- Lilian Bonia on the 15th of December 1914, valued the estate at $300 and Joseph Fagan and John Walsh provided the surety bonds.
- "...Administration, C.T.A. to the estate and effects of the late Elizabeth Peddle, late of St. Mary's, widow, deceased. To be granted to Lilian Bonia, daughter of the deceased."

"To the Honourable the Supreme Court of Newfoundland or one of the Honourable Judges thereof: The Petition of Lilian Bonia wife of John Bonia of St. Mary's, Newfoundland. Humbly sheweth as follows:
1. That your Petitioner's late mother the late Elizabeth Peddle, widow of James Peddle late of St. Mary's aforesaid died on or about the 12th day of October 1911 (handwritten - Nfld. born).
2. That previous to her death the said deceased made and executed a paper writing purporting to be her last will and testament which is hereto annexed, proven on the affidavit of J.. D. Burke one of the subscribing witnesses thereto.
3. That the said deceased failed to appoint an executor of her said last will and testament.
4. That at the time of her death the said deceased left her two surviving sons Andrew and Michael and your Petitioner.
5. That on the 15th day of September. A.D. 1912 your Petitioner's said brother the late Andrew Peddle was lost at sea, leaving no other representative behind him but your Petitioner and the said Michael Peddle who had for some years residing in Boston, United States of America.
6. That at the time of her death the said Elizabeth Peddle was possessed of property within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court of the probable value of three hundred Dollars ($300) which is more particularly described and set forth in the diagram hereto annexed marked "B".
7. That neither probate to any last will, nor Letters of Administration to the estate of the said deceased has been granted to any person.
Your Petition therefore humbly prays that your Honourable Court may grant her Letters of Administration C.T.A. to the last will and testament of the said Elizabeth Peddle.
And as in duty bound she will ever pray.
Dated at St. Mary's, this 16th day of November A.D. 1914. (Signed) Lilian Bonia."

The Description of Property, labelled "B" states that the Inventory contained Lands, Houses, Stores, etc. and any Interest in Land - Valued at $300. No other items were listed.

My Note: No mention is made of Elizabeth's son, James Butt, in the Probate records, although he is named in her Will.1
