Anecdote2008 Newfoundland, Canada; From the website of Cyril Dubourdieu (http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/d/u/b/Cyril-G-Dubourdieu/index.html):

I am researching the DUBOURDIEU family that came to Newfoundland in the mid 1800s. I have had an interest in genealogy for many years but only in the past 5 or 6 have I spent much time at it. Living in a rural part on an Island has presented itself with some difficulties but with a few well planned trips, the resources of the internet and the work of the Rev. William J. DuBourdieu Ph.D. have been able to track my DuBourdieu family back to the 1500s.
I remember the first stories of the DuBourdieu family came from my aunt and grandmother who had believe my great grandfather Augustine Saumarez DuBourdieu had come from England. The family had been forced to leave France, leaving a large property behind at about the time of the French revolution which the government had taken.
As I looked I found some truth in these tales, there was much more to it than I had thought. My Augustine Saumarez was born Saumarez DuBourdieu at Halifax, Nova Scotia. The son of Andrew DuBourdieu of Ireland and Mary Marshall of Burin, Newfoundland. It was said they lived in Boston but Andrew died on the Atlantic in 1859. In 1860 Mary and Saumarez returned to Newfoundland. Andrew was the great grandson of the first Saumarez DuBOURDIEU born 1717 in England.
The family had been forced to leave France not in the 18th century but the 17th century during the time of persecution of the Huguenots.. My many times great grandfather Jean Armond DuBOURDIEU born 1683 had been smuggled out of France on his mother's back. William DuBourdieu titled a book on the DuBOURDIEUs after this act, called "Baby On Her Back" A History of the Huguenot Family DuBourdieu, published in 1967. Jean Armond's father James DuBOURDIEU of Blaye was killed by Catholics in 1684/5. Jean Armond would grow up in the house of his grandfather Isaac DuBOURDIEU (b.1597). Isaac had been exiled to London England in 1682 from Montpellier where he was a Huguenot Minister. Isaac was the son of Pierre DuBOURDIEU a governor of the Chateau of Bergerac in the time of Henry IV of France. Jean also became a Huguenot clergy at the Chapel of Savoy in London. Married Charlotte Massey (the Countess d'Erponage) in 1716 and they had son Saumarez in 1717 who would become a well know clergyman in Lisburn, Ireland. It would be his descendants who wound up in such places as Scotland, the United States, Canada and Newfoundland.
Dr. William DuBourdieu traces the family from the Medieval Municipality of Bearn in Pyrenees, to Bergarac and the Garonne Gulf area of France.
Note from "Baby on Her Back" (condensed)
The 1st DuBourdieu was a French Knight of the 1st Great Crusade (1187ff.), known previously to then as Godefroy de Brius*. So eminent were his Crusader services that King Phillip II of France made him lord of Le Bourdieu ; in the early days written also"Le Bordeu, Le Bordiu, and Le Bordieu". He then adopted as his crest a Turkish scimitar. Subsequently, the family name of de Bruis was laid aside for the title, DuBOURDIEU.
One record states that the Le Bourdieu conferred by King Phillip II upon Godefroy de Brius was in Bearn.
The trail of my DuBOURDIEUs leads me from Port au Port Peninsula, Newfoundland, to Halifax, Nova Scotia / New England / Lisburn, Ireland / London, England / Montpellier, Bergerac and Bearn in France. I would love to hear from anyone with an interest in this or any related families.3
