Deceased had been in fairly good health up to a few weeks ago, when he gave up the herring fishery suffering from a cold. He had recovered from that, and was hoping to be at his usual work, in a few days. Friday evening; while partaking of his tea he had an attack of heart failure, which proved fatal. Deceased was born in Burin, having come to Bay of Islands a number of years ago, where he resided ever since. He leaves a wife, one son, James, and one daughter, Mrs. M. St. John.2 |

Death | 11 September 1925 | Marystown, Burin Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada; Death Registration states that Julia Malay, died of Cancer of the liver in Marystown at the age of 49 and was attended by Dr. C. Harris and Rev. J. McGrath, Catholic, born in Jean de Baie and buried in Marystown. Research Note: two descrepancies are her age. My records would indicate she was about 41 and that she was born in Salt Pond (not Jean de Baie which is a small settlement by Marystown). The 1935 Census indicates that Edward Malay was a widow though so it appears this is likely the correct Julia Malay. It also indicates that they had a daughter in 1924 and that would make her age of 49 most likely too old for childbearing.; Witness=Edward Mallay4 |

(Witness) Death | 15 April 1941 | Gravestone transcription states that he died on this date accidentally at the age of 57 years. Report of Accident from the Western Star newspaper on April 23, 1941: In a motor accident last Tuesday night John Wm. McCarthy lost his life, and a companion Frank McCarthy received minor injuries when hit by a bus driven by John Knight, of Mt. Moriah. The tragedy occurred about 11 o'clock Tuesday night, on a slope immediately to the east of Rourke's Brook on the Curling Highroad. The bus with passengers on board was west-bound at the time. So far as can be gathered from occupants of the car the two men were standing on the side of the road when the lights of the car flashed on them, but as the car drew near they seemed to have tried to cross the road. The police arrived on the scene within a few minutes and found John W. McCarthy beneath the vehicle. After extricating the victim he was immediately taken to hospital at Corner Brook where upon arrival it was found that life was extinct. The remains were taken to the home of the deceased on Wednesday, and the burial took place the following afternoon at Holy Redeemer cemetery. Deceased was 63 years of age, married. Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, five daughters, two brothers, at Corner Brook West, and two sisters, Mrs. J. McHugh and Mrs. J. Lewis of Curling.; Principal=John William McCarthy3,7 |
