Charles Marshall

ChartsDescendants of John Marshall & Mary Houlihan
(circa November 1856 - January 1881)
Last EditedNov 17, 2021
RelationshipGranduncle of Patricia Ann Monogue
FatherRichard George Marshall Esq. b. c 1818, d. 11 Mar 1898; Although I don't have definitive proof that the Charles Marshall who married Elizabeth Murray, I believe these facts bolster the case: 1. DNA matches between myself and descendants of Richard Joseph Marshall 2. This Charles died in 1881 and Richard George Marshall and Mary Hartson named a son born in 1881 as Charles (likely after Charles, his son from his 1st marriage had died that year) 3. Richard Joseph and his parents were Catholic as was Richard George 4. Charles and Elizabeth, his wife, named their first son, Richard Joseph (possibly after his father, Richard George) 5. No Burin Catholic Church after 1872 records mention a Charles Marshall as a sponsor to any of baptisms or marriages, possibly indicating that Charles had left the Burin area for St. John's.
MotherMarian Penney b. s 1819, d. bt 1860 - 1870

Family

Elizabeth Murray b. Nov 1857
Child
Birthcirca November 1856 Burin Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada1
Baptism21 November 1856 St. Patrick Catholic Church, Burin, Burin Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada; Parents are listed as Richard Marshall and Mary Ann Penny. Witnesses were Henry Benning and Mary Gleeson.1
(Witness) Baptism12 April 1872 Burin, Newfoundland, Canada; "Baptized - James of James Penny and Margaret Quirk. Sponsors Charles Marshall and Eliza Penny".; Principal=James Penney2
Occupationcirca 1873 Newfoundland, Canada; The death notice states he was a constable for about 7 years. It is likely that he was a member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary which is the provincial police service for Newfoundland.3
Marriage28 August 1879 Basiica of St. John the Baptist, St. John's, Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada; From the marriage register of St. John's Basilica: Charles Marshall, Policeman and residing at Fort Townsend married Elizabeth Murray, daughter of Sargeant Murray of Fort Townsend (correct spelling is Townshend). Witnesses were Allen McDonald and Mary Ann Ward. Married by Rev. W. Forrestal on August 29, 1879. (Interestingly, the Fort was actually abandoned in 1871; maybe it became the headquarters for the Constabulary for a time).
The Royal Newfoundland Gazette (September 2, 1879) stated that Charles Marshall and Elizabeth Murray, the only daughter of William Murray of Fort Townshend were married by Rev. Forristal on August 28 1879. (church record states August 29th).; Principal=Elizabeth Murray4
BurialJanuary 1881 Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, St. John's, Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada; Section B plot 382. Buried with wife, Elizabeth.5
DeathJanuary 1881 Bonne Bay, Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland, Canada; Descendants of Charles state that they had heard through the family stories, that Charles had drowned. Interestingly, Bonne Bay is in the extreme western part of Newfoundland and Charles's family lived in St. John's. Was he stationed there as a constable or had he gone there on a pleasure trip? Paul Carty who is mentioned in the newspaper announcement was the head of the RNC from 1873-1895.6,3
