Note19 August 1952 Summerside, Bay St. George District, Newfoundland, Canada; From the Western Star newspaper: "MEN HAVE CLOSE CALL : As Motor Boat Catches Fire While Returning From Summerside "Three residents of Corner Brook, Felix McCarthy, Anthony Lyver arid Gordon Quinton, had a rather hot time of it Friday night during their return trip from Summerside by motor boat. After their boat caught fire, the three were forced to take to the water; and McCarthy, who became exhausted during the half mile swim to shore, was rescured only by the prompt action of a Western Star employee, Baden Powell, and his father, Robert Powell of St. Aiden's Road, Curling East. The pair put out in a dory and rescued McCarthy from the waters of the Bay.
Lyver and Quinton, who were stronger swimmers, succeeded in reaching shore safely. ? Overheated, Engine Backfires: The three had gone to Summerside earlier in the evening to visit relatives of McCarthy's and on the return when about a half mile off Kennedy's Pt., the engine became overheated and backfired, catching fire. The boat was soon engulfed in flames and the occupants jumped into the water. All subsequently reached shore, but McCarthy was taken to Western Memorial Hospital. He was released the next day.
In the meantime, Gordon Wells of Curling put out in his motor boat to rescue the men, having heard their shouts. On finding that the burning craft was unoccupied, he got a line aboard and towed the boat to the beach where the Curling Fire Brigade extinguished the blaze. Although the craft was burned to the water level, the engine was salvaged."3

Report of Accident from the Western Star newspaper on April 23, 1941:
In a motor accident last Tuesday night John Wm. McCarthy lost his life, and a companion Frank McCarthy received minor injuries when hit by a bus driven by John Knight, of Mt. Moriah. The tragedy occurred about 11 o'clock Tuesday night, on a slope immediately to the east of Rourke's Brook on the Curling Highroad. The bus with passengers on board was west-bound at the time. So far as can be gathered from occupants of the car the two men were standing on the side of the road when the lights of the car flashed on them, but as the car drew near they seemed to have tried to cross the road. The police arrived on the scene within a few minutes and found John W. McCarthy beneath the vehicle. After extricating the victim he was immediately taken to hospital at Corner Brook where upon arrival it was found that life was extinct. The remains were taken to the home of the deceased on Wednesday, and the burial took place the following afternoon at Holy Redeemer cemetery. Deceased was 63 years of age, married. Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, five daughters, two brothers, at Corner Brook West, and two sisters, Mrs. J. McHugh and Mrs. J. Lewis of Curling.; Witness=Mary Bridget Hartson2,6
