Birth11 August 1883 Port au Bras, Burin Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada; Baptismal registration states that Frances Elizabeth Mitchell was born on Aug. 11, 1883 in Port au Bras, to Matthew and Jane Mitchell, female, father is a fisherman. Baptized on August 25th in the Church of England by A. Harmon.3,4
Notecirca 1890 This note is included in "The Newfoundland Tsunami of November 18, 1929: An Examination of the Twenty-eight Deaths of the South Coast Disaster." -
"Vincent Joseph Kelly was born into a Catholic family in Step-a-side (Kelly's Cove on Burin Island) of John Kelly and Isabella Kelly (nee Marshall) in late 1883 or early January 1884. The St. Patrick's Parish baptism registry for 1833-1894 shows him baptized on January 19, 1884. His parents died when he was very young and he was raised by the Wagg family in Kelly's Cove (Susan Wagg); the Waggs were members of the Methodist Church. Mrs. Joseph Kelly was born Frances Elizabeth Mitchell into an Anglican family from Port au Bras. Some time prior to 1914 Frances Mitchell married a Mr. ?? Keans ( or Keynes). Mr. Keans drowned some time prior to 1914 and there were no children. On January 20, 1914, Vincent Kelley and Frances (Fannie) Keans were married at the Zion Methodist Church, Collins Cove, Burin. Vincent J. Kelly died at age 74 on February 21, 1958, and was buried two days later at Collins Cove. The two-storey, seven-room Kelly house was located on the very northwest end of Burin Island. It is believed that the floating house with Frances and Dorothy Kelly still inside passed out through Bull Gut between Burin Island and Pardy Island, and that it broke up on the shoals in Placentia Bay to the east of Burin Island. The two bodies were never found. Vincent Kelly had three surviving children, Marian, age 15, Curtis, 12, and Roy, 4."
(My note - Some of the above information is not accurate as Fannie had two children in her first marriage and her baptismal record shows her being baptized on August 11, 1883, not 1887. It appears that the Vincent's sisters, Marion and Isabella went to live with cousin Philomena Burke McNamara as they are with them in Nova Scotia in the 1901 Census."; Principal=Vincent Joseph Kelly5,6

Dorothy, daughter, born Dec. 1919, Methodist, age 1.; Principal=Vincent Joseph Kelly8
Death18 November 1929 Burin, Newfoundland, Canada; Fanny and her daughter, Dorothy, were washed out to sea when the 1929 Tidal Wave hit Burin.

From The History of Burin: "Kelly's Cove was a small fishing hamlet near Foot's Cove...In 1929, the Cove contained seven families...The fishing season had just finished for the year and four of the seven men decided, as was their custom, to go to Paradise Sound to cut firewood for the winter. So they left the Cove about five o'clock, on the 18th, and had no knowledge of what had transpired until they returned a week later...Then about 8 o'clock a large wave occasioned by a fault, extending East from the Gulf of St. Lawrence roared landwards, swept along the Cove carrying houses situared near the sea, stores, fences, flakes and boats hauled up for the winter. It simply devoured everything in its path. The roaring of the wave occasioned concern among the inhabitants, and especially in the home of Vincent Kelly, whose house was situated near the sea. The four children were in bed, and the mother was downstairs doing her usual chores. Hearing the noise she rushed upstairs, awakened the chidren, and in their night-attire they scrambled over the fence to higher ground. The mother, however, went back to the house for her little girl's shoes, and she was taken out to see and never seen again..."

Although this passage does not mention the child Dorothy, the death registrations show that she lost her life also.
The death registrations state: Died on November 18, 1929 at Kelley's Cove, Fanny Kelly, aged 43, born Pardy's Island, Roman Catholic, due to drowning by Tidal Wave, body never returned. Dorothy Kelly, aged 10, born Pardy's Island, died at Kelley's Cove (same date and cause of death), Roman Catholic, body never returned.

Another source states that Fanny was carrying her daughter when they were washed out to sea.; Witness=Vincent Joseph Kelly3,9,10
